The San Miguel Fort and its Museum of Mayan Art are arguably the city of Campeche’s signature historical attractions. If you are going to pay a visit to anything in the city, this should be first on your list.

Built towards the end of the eighteenth century, the fort was built on a hill and covered more than 41,000 square feet. It has been nicely restored and offers a good view of the sea. Interestingly it served Santa Ana when he set up barracks there and attacked Campeche in 1842.

The fort also is home to the Museum which has some really beautiful pieces like ceramic utensils, obsidian and stone tools, items relating to the religion and funeral customs of the Maya during the period prior to the arrival of the Spanish. Very well displayed and well kept.

This is definitely a stop you do not want to miss.

We went here by taxi (45 pesos) and spend a little time here. Good info about Maya culture in English on the walls, not in the displays. View from the fort was nice. Had to ask the staff to call a taxi back to the citycenter since there weren't any in the parking spot.

It was oke but not really worth the money we had to spend in order to travel here. You might just as wel go to baluarte de san Carlos in the center.

The fort and museum are small, but they have the jade masks found in the tombs at Calakmul, so a must see for those visiting Mayan sites. Most treasures like tomb masks are housed in the big anthropological museum in Mexico City.

This fortification is, perhaps, the most representaive edification among the defensive system of the ancient city of San Francisco de Campeche. It is located at the top of one of the hills that surround the city. aprox. 3 kms away from the city downtown. You can get there by taxi, bus, or if you have a good physical condition, riding a bicycle o even walking. Don't forget to take your camera to enjoy the view of the Gulf of Mexico-
