Owner description: Large, crystal clear lake fed by underwater cenotes and surrounded by dense tropical rainforest.

We own a little house in Tulum and we often will head to Bacalar just for something different. The color of the freshwater here is astounding. Taking a guided tour of the lake is recommended however if you really want to experience the lake, rent a kayak. If you drive along the costera there are many places to rent one. Tour operators line the lakeside drive selling tours. Also make sure to visit Cenote Azul.

We stopped...to eat something on the road.....we had one of most funny days of all vacation.
Ok u're in Caribbean sea....but Bacalar lake must be visited!take a boat (don't pay more than 1000 pesos..)for a 2 hours tour from chenotes to blu lagoon where u can swim, have a maya bath,relax,tanning...all sarrounded by colours that changes from blu to green to to to...much more than seven accordin to sun light!!...In few words...STOP here for a day.I suggest not to stop @the imbarcadero but just a little early, cheper prices, private boat, funny local and u can make your own tour according to your travel plans....anyway...stop sto stop here!

Really nice place to visit if you want to take a nice drive. Bordering Belize, the view of this colourful lagoon is just spectacular. You can eat at the restaurant overlooking this beautiful scenery.

Is the lake is a bit off the main travel grid. Perhaps that is a good thing, as despite some efforts in the town, not overly commercial by any means. If you love to swim and kayak a good destination. A long way to get there just for the view though. Perfect temperature and feel( high calcium content) gives water a silky texture. Clear and unlike remote sections of the coast- almost no trash.
Excellent eating at the Encantado, just outside of town and I would recommended staying at one of the places outside of town as the swimming is much better and water cleaner. Other the than the attractive main plaza the town has almost no personality and folks seem to have little joy. Not unfriendly, but just not much energy in the place. the Cenote Azul is a marvelous swimming spot and another gem.
