As every Mexican town has a market, so does Veracruz. This is the heart of the city. Yes they have Sam's Club, Costco, and other large supermarkets, but at these places you get the same unripe vegetables. and fruit and old meat that you find in an American grocery store. Go to the market and you see the freshest ripe fruit, and meat or chicken that is still warm after it was butchered in a back room.
The market in Veracruz is lively, safe and a must see if you are in the city. It does not compare with some of the incredible food markets in Mexico City, but is worth a visit when in town.
The food stalls serve wonderful, cheap food. some of the best you can find. Try the Picadas a local favorite, a sort of tortilla tart with salsa and what ever you want.
