“Convenient location, but don't get this room!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2011

We stayed at Villa Rica for one night during our winter vacation in Veracruz. We picked the hotel because it was very inexpensive and had a decent review in the Lonely Planet Mexico. We figured we didn't need any more amenities, when all we needed was a comfortable bed and bathroom before leaving the next morning to our final destination.

Although amicable, the front-desk service at Villa Rica was nothing special. We arrived without a reservation and, as the hotel was almost full, we were offered the last two options: a single room with a king bed and a room behind the front desk with three beds. Since friends would be joining us later on, we picked the latter option and split the cost with our friends.

The room had three rather large single beds, no windows, a dim orange light, a desk and stool, a very old-looking air conditioner and very tall ceilings. The beds were not the comfiest, but we slept nonetheless. The air conditioner didn't cool the room enough, which was a problem due to the lack of windows; and, although we didn't notice it after falling asleep, our friends said it rattled loudly the whole night.

The bathroom was very narrow and long, and had no windows. Everything except the door worked well, but the tile was in bad shape, as if numerous layers of tile had been put on and taken off over the years; and while it was very clean, the resulting floor texture was not appealing.

The public areas, however, were clean and well maintained. The reception had nice wood paneling, which reinforced the nautical feel of the area it's in. It also had great big wooden rocking chairs, which are great when you're waiting for someone or to be called for breakfast at the restaurant next door.

Villa Rica's best attribute was its location. It was close to our bus stop in downtown Veracruz. It was right in front of the "malecón," which allowed us to explore the length of the waterfront in the late afternoon and early evening. Several small restaurants were also close by. Although a tad empty at night, the area felt safe.

Next time around I might pick a different place just to see what other places have to offer, but since I have no idea what the rest of the rooms are like, I can only recommend not to take the room behind the front desk!

Room Tip: Don't pick the room behind the front desk. Try to get a room with a view of the waterfront.
