You really have to have the time to go through so many stalls in these street market to find what you really want. You can also bargain with your seller but up to a point. Quality of the merchandise is very wide but more on the lower scale though you might find some unique silver pieces by some young silversmiths. I heard the unconfirmed rumor that some of the silver trinkets for sale are now made in and imported from China so be aware of that possible threat --after all, the Chinese are tricky enough to copy Mexican silver designs as they have done with some of the Mexican Talavera pottery already.

The beetle cars are going slow, and nearby lots of silver handcroft, lots of people. Mostly You buy copies in quantities, but so beautiful just to be there to look at the people although You would not buy what You see. For quality You have to go to the installed shops or You are lucky to find the one....

“Buyer beware”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

If you want to admire an original handmade and quality piece visit the designer boutiques or museums to appreciate the true art of jewelry making.
Unfortunatly, many small merchants in Taxco are not honest and sell jewelry that is not silver, claiming that it is. Also most of what is sold in Taxco can be purchased in other Mexican cities as they are mass produced, shipped and marketed just about everywhere. Be sure to shop around and see what prices are like, and be prepared to bargain with the seller.
The cooperative near the market or zocalo is my example. I bought three rings all stamped 925 silver, got a receipt, only to find out that one started to tarnish and rust when I got home. To return the item implies mailing the ring back to the merchant for a refund that may or may not be given.
It is unfortunate that some of the dealers and merchants are killing their own business by sabotaging their own livelyhood. With Internet and websites such as Tripadvisor, the consumer is more aware of what options are available and what other people's experiences were. Be careful when buying silver, ask the merchant to show you the cedrtification stamp, ask for a receipt with an email address and phone number.
You can always try putting a magnet to the item, if it is pure silver it should not stick to the magnet.
