“oh la la, Bela's!”
Reviewed January 5, 2011

We usually don't seek out bed and breakfasts; we prefer our own space and have experienced b and b's where there was too much chintz and knick knacks. But Belas was perfect. Besides having a perfect, quiet location, we met the most interesting people there and had wonderful conversations in the sunny breakfast room around the table. The breakfasts are bountiful, fresh and delicious. The three rooms with attached baths are spacious and airy, unlike most rooms in other hotels in San Cristobal. The windows let in sun which keeps the rooms warmer than most. We enjoyed the lovely garden and the communal outside spaces. Bela is the perfect hostess: attentive, knowledgeable, accessible yet we never found her to be intrusive. She knows everything and everyone and shares her information when asked. And I've never stayed in any hotel anywhere that has such a great collection of good books! Our experience staying at Bela's felt different than staying in a hotel room. Here, we felt like we were a part of the city. We can't wait to come back.

My husband and I stayed at Bela's for four nights in June, and couldn't have asked for more. We had the room at the top of the steps with a balcony, looking out over the town and mountains. The location was perfect - very convenient yet quiet. Bela was so kind and helpful, despite a staff-related medical emergency. All her advice was invaluable.

WiFi Internet access worked well, and Bela was able to arange a reliable driver for transfer to/from the airport at Tuxtla Gutierrez.

We loved San Cristobal and the surrounding countryside and would return to stay at Bela's in a heartbeat, if the chance ever came again.

What can I say. This place felt like home (plenty of interesting books in the wood cabinet but we had too much to see around). It is well maintained (be careful of the hot water - they are REALLY hot), well decorated (I wish I'd have the energy to invest this much in my apartment) and well equipped (no TV but no real use for it in this wonderful town). Our room was upgraded without extra charge (low season). Breakfast was excellent and extremely diverse (ask for huevos a la Mexicana).

Bela (and her 4 friendly dogs) was welcoming from the first moment we booked our stay. She made sure we easily found our way to the place, briefed us in length on what S.C.D.L.C. and its surrounding had to offer us and went beyond to make sure we make the best out of our stay (suggesting where to book what excursion, what is considered a bargain, where is the best Hummus!, etc.). It even got to the point that Bela "insisted" on helping us find good accommodation in our next destination (Palenque).

You wouldn't regret staying here. We knew we would regret leaving but you can't appreciate the good without the bad in life...

We loved our 4 nights with Bela, including her 4 dogs and the other fine guests she seems to attract. Bela is from the USA and carries her hippie commune roots into her B&B. The place is tasteful and charming, no incense or beads. It is only if you linger after breakfast will you learn of Bela's amazing life story. She has the right style for being in the B&B business.
She is also a very knowledgeable travel advisor for her paying guests. Calling the USA using her Vonage phone was free and easy. Na Bolom charged me 10 peso's per minute.
To think I am now sitting in Madison Wisconsin, when just yesterday...

Bela's talent is her ability to make her guests feel welcome. Guests enjoy comfortable beds, clean rooms and excellent food; Bela shares her thorough knowledge of the area. She has a great sense of humor and her eye for detail is what makes her B and B so outstanding. I enjoyed fresh flowers, a daily locally made truffle, an electric blanket, a do-not-miss Manuela's "comida" at 2:30, two massages, a toasty chimanea fire during breakfast on a cool morning, cut up fruit, homemade granola to name just a few! I chose Bela's B and B because of all the terrific reviews I read from other satisfied guests. In appreciation to them for heading me in Bela's direction, and in appreciation to her, for living up to all the praise, I would like to add my voice with my own recommendation. A stay at Bela's B and B paired with your visit to San Cristobal brings two remarkable places together.

We were so glad to have discovered Bela's B&B on trip advisor, all the reviews do describe it perfectly. We enjoyed Bela's suggestion of an organised tour to local villages.
Bela's rooms were clean and the beds were super comfortable - breakfast was fresh and delicious. Bela is a mind full of information and top tips! Perfect

Staying at Bela's, was like viisting a good friend. I came in late, it was raining,I was tired, Bela fixed me a cup of hot tea and all but tucked me into bed.

I had the cottage bedroom. Looking out into the garden was a daily delight.

Bela herself is warm, witty and a very comfortable woman, her staff, gentle and ever so accomodating.

I can hardly wait to visit again.
