Bela's is where I plan on staying every time I visit San Cristobal.
For starters: location! It's close to Santo Domingo, and a short walk gets you to the zocalo. I've stayed other places in SCDLC that were a similar distance away, but also had more hills and such. The route from Bela's to everything else is relatively flat, so you don't feel like you are climbing mountains (although at that altitude, you really are!)
Next point: the breakfast. Delicious fruit salad, eggs, bacon, great toast, fantastic coffee (I am friends with Bela's coffee supplier, but did not know that he was her supplier until she asked me who I was in town visiting) and friendly staff. Not to mention, there are all sorts of different folks coming through Bela's so you will definitely find some interesting conversation around the table.
The facilities: I shared a bathroom for the first half of my trip and then moved to a room with one ensuite. They were never dirty. One touch that I found both incredibly hospitable and hilarious at the same time was that if I didn't put away my dirty clothes, they'd get folded. Bela and her staff put resort hotels to shame. Even though there were no fireplaces in the bedrooms, which I thought I would be disappointed by, the electric blankets more than made up for it! The beds are incredibly comfortable and have wonderfully coordinated sheet sets. And even though it was February there were still plenty of beautiful flowers and hummingbirds in the garden. My only frustration was that the Wi-Fi signal wasn't always strong, but I haven't stayed anywhere with perfect Wi-Fi in San Cristobal to begin with!
And finally, of course, Bela. She really takes an interest in her guests, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the area and the many cultures around it. Some of the people in my group were staying at other places, but I brought them over to see Bela's and she had no problem taking a break and talking with my friends. Not to mention, she charges you LESS if you are traveling alone - there are few places that do this, and I really appreciated that policy!
Overall - what are you waiting for? This place is the real deal - value, comfort, and service - so get on the next flight to Tuxtla, deal with the drive up into the mountains, and then enjoy Bela's for a few days. You won't regret it.
