Bela's is where I plan on staying every time I visit San Cristobal.

For starters: location! It's close to Santo Domingo, and a short walk gets you to the zocalo. I've stayed other places in SCDLC that were a similar distance away, but also had more hills and such. The route from Bela's to everything else is relatively flat, so you don't feel like you are climbing mountains (although at that altitude, you really are!)

Next point: the breakfast. Delicious fruit salad, eggs, bacon, great toast, fantastic coffee (I am friends with Bela's coffee supplier, but did not know that he was her supplier until she asked me who I was in town visiting) and friendly staff. Not to mention, there are all sorts of different folks coming through Bela's so you will definitely find some interesting conversation around the table.

The facilities: I shared a bathroom for the first half of my trip and then moved to a room with one ensuite. They were never dirty. One touch that I found both incredibly hospitable and hilarious at the same time was that if I didn't put away my dirty clothes, they'd get folded. Bela and her staff put resort hotels to shame. Even though there were no fireplaces in the bedrooms, which I thought I would be disappointed by, the electric blankets more than made up for it! The beds are incredibly comfortable and have wonderfully coordinated sheet sets. And even though it was February there were still plenty of beautiful flowers and hummingbirds in the garden. My only frustration was that the Wi-Fi signal wasn't always strong, but I haven't stayed anywhere with perfect Wi-Fi in San Cristobal to begin with!

And finally, of course, Bela. She really takes an interest in her guests, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the area and the many cultures around it. Some of the people in my group were staying at other places, but I brought them over to see Bela's and she had no problem taking a break and talking with my friends. Not to mention, she charges you LESS if you are traveling alone - there are few places that do this, and I really appreciated that policy!

Overall - what are you waiting for? This place is the real deal - value, comfort, and service - so get on the next flight to Tuxtla, deal with the drive up into the mountains, and then enjoy Bela's for a few days. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: The shared bath rooms are great if you are a single traveler. The balcony room is fantastic.

A stone’s throw away from the riotous Artisania Market and the ornate Templo Santo Domingo, Bela’s B&B is a quiet sanctuary from the bustle just outside it’s doors—yet retains the locale’s eye-catching colour and beauty on the inside. You needn’t leave this splendid site at all as the garden and its accents are enough in itself for a contemplative and calming holiday. We had an upstairs room with a corner window that offered rooftop views and the mountains beyond. At the end of a cobblestone-weary day, we sat outside on an adjacent terrace with a glass of wine taking in the sweet fragrance of this place. A sound (yet soundless!) sleep was assured every night in our comfy bed with flannel sheets.

The fire-warmed breakfast room offers high-drama views onto the garden. Yogurt, granola, fruit, toast, eggs and bacon are ample and delicious. Manuela’s meals are second to none in Chiapas judging from the splendid lunch treat we had. It must be said that Bela is passionate about all things from San Cristobal and environs - from its refined pottery and exquisite textiles - to its many restaurants. She made many recommendations that did not disappoint and arranged day trips for us to outlying villages with driver, Ricardo (very affordable.) Another pleasure available here are the on-site massages. For approximately $35 (Cdn) Theresa’s hour and a half massage is better than the best Margarita you ever had!

Bela is a warm and generous host and made my husband and I feel like friends rather than simply “clientele.” Judging from the guests who have returned to this charming place, we are not alone – everyone adores Bela and her B&B!

Have been going to Bela's for several years, She is a warm, beautiful host. If you want to explore the area she will advise and coordinate. Great comfy rooms with a wonderful staff. You can have a wonderful breakfast, get an amazing massage, and shop just a few doors over. If I could give a 10, I would.

Room Tip: Love the 2 new rooms, but the cottage is awfully cozy.

We recently had a great stay at Bela's. This was one of the best B&B experiences I've ever had. The accommodations were awesome. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing. Breakfast was perfect (including the best bread I've had in Mexico). My wife reported having a superior massage on-site. The location couldn't be better--close to restaurants and nightlife, yet far enough away to allow for peaceful sleep and relaxation. What made this stay truly outstanding, though was Bela. She offered great suggestions and provided a special character without being intrusive. Will stay again.

Room Tip: We loved the top room--great views

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend almost 2 weeks at Bela's with 7 other women and can not sing its praises enough. Bela is a wonderful innkeeper who was so warm and helpful during our stay. The B&B is beautiful and charming. A big plus is that it is very close to the walking streets and to the artisans daily market. My room was cozy with a very comfy bed, lots of blankets, including electric, and a towel warmer. The lovely garden is a plus. Bela's staff is great and breakfasts were delicious with artisan breads, fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, granola and more. And for me the icing was the four adorable dogs that are there taking care of Bela!

Bela is well- deserving of her number one status in San Cristobal and I can only echo everyone else's comments. Beautiful surroundings, lovely and comfortable room, a great location and Bela's friendly and helpful nature make this a great place to stay. We were sad to leave!

I have just completed a wonderful vacation in Chiapas. We were traveling as a group of friends for 13 days. One of the great finds was our accommodations in San Cristobal de las Casas. This B&B was so welcoming, charming and comfortable. It had terrific rooms, too delicious breakfasts, cuddly puppies, an inspiring garden, fabulous hospitality and answers to all our questions. Bela has decorated the whole house with delightful art and colourful touches that make you want to go out and find all the same treasures to take home. It is centrally located, but quiet - easy walking to all the city sites. It was really like visiting family! i have no hesitations in recommending Bela's for your stay....enjoy!

Room Tip: All the rooms had their advantages - but go upstairs for a view.
