“a great night out in SC”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Once again TripAdvisor recommendations come through. A charming tiny restaurant with a small but delicious menu, a friendly multilingual staff (thank you, Freddy), a exemplary host, and the friendliest environment you could want. So small that conversation among patrons at the other 2 tables is almost inevitable, and on our evening an added pleasure.

“A special treat in San Cristobal!”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

We stopped by early in the afternoon to see if we could reserve a table for four later that evening. The owner/chef welcomed us and reserved the table for us AND the last two boeuf bourguignon meals available. We arrived a few hours later and spent the evening savouring our meals, the great French wine AND the very special hospitality. The beef was some of the best ever - a signature dish! We will be back the next time we visit San Cristobal and will make sure we reserve a couple of days ahead so we can all eat the boeuf bourguinon.

“Cozy and Inviting!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014 via mobile

Not to be missed for a warm, cozy, delicious meal! We both had the bœuf bourguignon and pomme frites. A lovely meal and a nice break from Mexican food. The vin chaud was perfect on the cold and rainy night. Ben the chef/owner was charming and friendly. The tiniest, charming restaurant in San Cristobal!

“Don't understand the hype”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

First of all, a salad (with French fries?!) does not constitute a vegan or even vegetarian friendly place. The staff was very friendly, the mulled wine all right (at least difficult to get better on this side of the Atlantic), but apart from that? Nah. Tiny places can be cosy, but it's a bit too much when people have to move for you to be able to enter and exit the toilet (the size of the toilet ... well, let's just not). It was also expensive for what you got. There are LOTS of other, better, places in San Cristobal to go to if one wants to "escape" the Mexican fare for a night.

Thank you very much for your comment whereas it left us really surprised as I remember you both well and personally attended you on table N1 : I remember that you were both quite pleased on the moment with what you ate, especially with the Vegetarian Croc. I always personaly check that the plates were fine for our guests because in the event that one of our customers would not like what we served (which never happened up to now), we do not charge him the plate he did not like. And as I explained you when you came : we ARE NOT A VEGGIE PLACE BUT A FRENCH RESTAURANT (unfortunately useless to say that France is not a big veggie country; however we decided to propose a few option to veggies and up to now all our veggie customers have been satisfied with those ones). Moroever, we explained you of what consisted the Assiette Vegetarienne and you had the picture in front of you during all the meal, how could you be surprised with the french fries on the top ?! In addition to that, about the size of the Chalet, it is pretty obvious that entering the place and even from outside view that we are quite tiny... We wanted to make people feel like at home, what is happening every day and about the bathrooms there are not the biggest I recognize but they are of decent size and clean.
And about the "hype" it is the first time I heard the expression regarding our small restaurant, we just want to propose without any pretention, the best quality home-made food we can with the best efforts to receive our guests. We feel really sorry that you did not enjoy afterwards your culinary experience with us.

“Delicious French cuisine and great hospitality in a cozy setting.”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

If you like good food, welcoming hospitality in a "petite" cosy setting, drop by to this small but excellent restaurant. This is the best restaurant experience we had in our 3 week trip to Mexico.

After leaving sunny Playa del Carmen we got to Cristobal in December, it was wet, miserable and our lodgings wasn't great. Not a good start until we found this place a few days later - it literally turned our stay in Cristobal around.

We both opted for the boeuf bourguignon - an old recipe from the owners grandmother. Beef marinated in wine for 24 hours and slow cooked till tenderised perfection. Served with authentic French fries and a light salad to counter balance the rich tender beef. Simply delicious.
I had the Merlot and my wife had the mulled wine (gluhwein) a favourite of hers - both went very well with the dish.
Service was friendly, efficient and a pleasure. It would put other better rated / expensive places we've been to, to shame.
Finally dining isn't just about eating, its also about the dining experience. The owner & chef made us feel very welcome and thoroughly looked after us, joining our discussions at the end of the meal. We arrived as guests, treated as family and left as friends.

We enjoyed ourselves so much, we are going to go back again.
I can't think of any praise better than that.

FYI: TripAdvisor has marked this place at the wrong map location - a common problem it seems. (address is correct) Walk down the pedestrian Guadalope until you get to Diego Dugelay. Its just there on the right.
