The mulled wine at El Chalet (accompanied by frites, some boeuf borgengione and a croque madam) made our merry party of six chilled travelers very happy!

We visited here for a special occasion, and were not disappointed, despite being the only diners in the restaurant. This didn't make us feel conspicuous in any way, since the restaurant is so small that it feels cosy even with only two people dining.

The menu choice is very limited, although there is a choice of things from snacks to main courses. We opted for the chicken and beef bourguignon main courses, and both were excellent, with good portion sizes.

Wine is sold by the glass, so we sampled the rather nice house red. A speciality of the house is the mulled wine, made to an Alpine recipe: this was excellent, and is apparently a big draw for people in the area.

The waiter was attentive and keen to help. The owner was also very friendly and chatted with us for a while.

I was surprised that they do not serve coffee. The owner explained that there is such good coffee available in surrounding places that they do not think that it would make sense for them to sell coffee which they doubt would be as good. This is a good indication of their approach to producing only a few things which they can do very well... but if I could have had a coffee, I would have been happy to sit for a bit longer and maybe buy something else!

If you are in San Cristobal and have time, do visit this restaurant. It is central, just off the main pedestrian street, and you can even just pop in for a snack.

Chose this place based on the reviews and we were not disappointed. Sick of the local Mexican food we wanted something savory and tasty. Ordered the beef, chicken and croque Madame . Super delicious and great wine!! Owners were super nice and have us great service. Would highly recommend this place when staying in Cristobal de las Casas!

If you need to escape Mexican food this is the place for you. On the night we went we were the only people there but due to the rave reviews we were not put off by the sight of an empty restaurant. The food is good but there is a limited menu, hence the reason for the Beef Bourguignon being mentioned so often (it is good though!!!). The wine list is limited and was the most expensive part of our meal.
The name of the restaurant gives you a very big clue about the size, it is small and some people might find it a bit cramped when all the tables are occupied and getting to the toilet could be fun

We had comida here today, with the best French fries we have ever had.....on top of a delicious salad! Also, the croque monsieur was excellent.
It seems, talking to the owner that business is slow in the town and many restaurants have closed; so,we are not sure how much longer this one may operate....so,go now and enjoy!
