“Relaxed hostel”
Reviewed January 29, 2014 via mobile

Had a really nice time here, the place is so relaxing, with beautiful gardens and good natured dogs running around. We had a private room, which was beautiful and had great views from the balcony. Kitchen is good and well stocked; breakfast was simple but good.

after doing more extensive research and having stayed in a not so great hostel here I came upon the backpacker's hostel rossco.they run a very good hostel clean and very affordable.but it was the beds in the dorms that won me over.they were incredibly comfortable and plently of covers to keep you warm on cold san cristobal nights.centraly located to activities downtown made getting around quite easy.they have a garden like area that is also very attractive.i would come back here easily.

Room Tip: of all your options here in san cristobal, this is one definitely worth checking into

This place was lovely! My friend and I stayed in the ladies dorm room, it was clean, blankets we super cozy, the shared bathrooms were also clean and there was plenty of hot water. Staff was friendly and informative, the 8-10pm fire each night is a great way to meet people...not too wild party vibes either. People usually link up at the fire and head into town afterwards. Wifi works great, but for the most part just in one central room with outlets in it. There are also lots of dogs and cats there that they bring in from the streets, all the dogs are super adorable and friendly!! Overall, great experience!

For the price of a bed in a dorm (99pesos) you get quite a lot: clean dorms (with lockers) and bathrooms, breakfast, wifi (although it doesn't work very well inside the dorms) and a cosy environment. If you get a tour to discover other sites of Chiapas (Cañón del Sumidero, Palenque etc.), the hostel offers you a better price than the price offered by the travel agencies. Besides, it is quite well located in San Cristóbal (next to the Templo de Santo Domingo).
If you come from Tuxtla Gutierrez airport and you are more than two people, I'd strongly recommend to take a taxi to San Cristóbal (brings you to the door of the hostel and costs around 600pesos), instead of the bus which leaves you in the bus terminal (quite far away from the hostel and it already costs 178pesos).
Ah! In December 2013 they had a 3x4 nights offer.

The staff at Rossco were very friendly and welcoming. We stayed in a lovely private room- that was clean and cosy. The free bonfire every night makes for a sociable and welcoming atmosphere. I ended up staying over a week, and during this time in San cristobal, unfortunately, had something stolen. The hostel were really supportive and looked after me, they really helped me to sort everything out.

Rossco's is a nice hostel-- I really liked the large kitchen, really hot water, fireplace, and cleanliness. It can be quite cold in San Cristobal, and the wifi only works from the central area which is in the open air...Rossco's could add a warmer lounge area to keep guests from freezing! Included breakfast is nice, but for what you pay, toast, coffee, and fruit seems like they're skimping a bit. If you book online for the "discount" price of 80 pesos, know that you can only get your fourth night free if you stay at the regular price of 100/night (for the dorms). It's a bit misleading and gets you to believe they offer a great deal. Obviously, they are charging 80/night but marketing themselves as a fantastic deal giving out free nights.

We stayed in a twin room here which was secure. The grounds were lovely and well kept and the kitchen area was nice. The hostel staff tried to be helpful although their English wasn't great, but we got by with our rubbish Spanish!!

On the down side, I was absolutely freezing at night and could have done with extra blankets, I did totally underestimate the drop in temperature at night but I barely slept a wink in two nights. We also had a group of German lads in the room next to us and we could literally hear every word they said through the walls, every text they received, them going to the loo - everything! No hot water on two occasions which was very much needed after being freezing cold all night.

The other main concern was the location which at first seemed perfect, however it's slightly outside of the main area, though only by about 500m however we did have an incident with a guy trying to attack my friend on the walk home around midnight. The hotel staff said that this kind of thing was unheard of although we were also followed by two blokes the day before. We absolutely loved San Cristobal - it was pretty much our favourite place in Mexico - however I would urge women to keep their wits about them and try not to get home too late (which is a shame because the night life is great). Having said that, we may have just been unlucky and obviously these kind of things can happen anywhere.
