“Mexican Perfection”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

A historic, quaint, and very comfortable hotel. We stayed 6 nights, and found the location great...close to everything, but on a quiet side street. The manager is fantastic...always at hand in the hotel as well as at the Comidor Dona Rita, a very good restaurant right across the one way street. We enjoyed all our buffet breakfasts, and many dinners there...Jaun's limon pie is THE best!

Susan Ross, Canada

Room Tip: Third floor off street, if you can do stairs....inner courtyards are delightful!

A historic building with interesting artifacts. Rooms maybe a bit on small side but cosy and full of atmosphere. Very helpful staff, fast wifi in rooms, excellent buffet breakfast. Centrally located. On a tour so can't comment on value.

I stayed here in January 2014 while on VJV tour. It is a nice hotel with inner courtyards and gardens as mentioned. The restaurant is across the road, breakfast was fine and the hotel is quite well located for the main square. My room did overlook the inner corridor on the ground floor. It was quite cold in San Cristobal as it is fairly high. The room was very cold but there was a fan heater which warmed it up quickly as the room wasn't very large, neither was the bathroom. My room of course was particularly dark as I had to have the curtains drawn all the time as people were walking by. It was also quite noisy but we were just here for one night and I did actually like the hotel. I think there were MUCH better rooms than I had although it was tastefully furnished.

Room Tip: The rooms are varied - ask for the type of room you personally prefer

This is in a very good location in the delightful old town, just a pleasant stroll away from the main plaza, restaurants and shops. The hotel has very pretty inner courtyards. We stayed in the Master Suite which is at the top of the building and is a perfect combination of a large, light, bright room but in a characterful old colonial house. It has a view over red roofs to the forested mountains beyond. Other rooms looked into the inner courtyards which I imagine are more dark, and some just looked into a corridor which must have no natural light at all. Presumably they are priced accordingly. The breakfast buffet was good but when the hotel was quieter and there was not a buffet but food cooked to order it was not so good, surprisingly.

Room Tip: Book the Master Suite for a spacious, very light room, unusual in an old colonial building.

The Casavieja was excellently located and full of charm. The room was warm in the evenings, despite the chill outside in late November. The hotel is convenient to many good restaurants and music venues, just off the pedestrian street. The front desk staff was helpful.

Room Tip: Away from the street (towards the back of the hotel) as sometimes in the night we could hear trucks...

This hotel is on a very narrow street, which will not take tour coaches. We were provided with taxis,to get to the hotel as we arrived late in the evening after a journey from Palenque, but other guests had a long walk with luggage. Although I have rated this as very good it is really somewhere between average and very good. The hotel is based on an old colonial house, and this adds to its charm, but the bathroom in our room was quite small and surprisingly no glasses were provided- there were however coffee making facilities in the room - this seems to be a rarity in Mexican hotels. The hotel is situated 6 blocks down from the Cathedral square. The pavements are uneven and have dips for car entry across them-be careful at night. The town was very lively in the evening, and the central area well lit. The restaurant, as other reviewers have mentioned is diagonally across the street from the hotel, and had very few guests for dinner. The portions of Casa Vieja Chicken Breast were large with a nice mushroom sauce and vegetables. Our 07.00 hrs breakfast, agaIn across the road was very good and buffet style, with a good selection of food, and helpful staff. Due to our long journey (9 hours) to Panajachel,Guartemala the hotel provided reasonable lunch boxes (at 88 Mexican pesos) for our journey. There is a road exit tax from Mexico to Guartemala - it is best to pay the tax of 295 Mexican pesos pp in a bank near the border and get a receipt to be put in your passport. You also need to relinquish your Mexican entry form at the border and gain your first experience of "sweetner payment" to ensure smooth passage across the border. You have a longish walk with your hand luggage uphill between the Mexican crossing points and the Guartemala border post, through a road lined with souvenir stalls etc- hot and humid when we crossed. San Christobel de Las Casas is about 4 hours drive from the border

We had to walk all the way though the town with our luggage to get to this hotel as the street are so narrow. The hotel was welcoming had I been in a fit state to appreciate it after the walk.
The layout of the hotel was strange as the restaurant was down and across the road from the hotel. The hotel was decorated with interesting articles. There was no air con.
