After Oaxaca we had high hopes for San Crisobal de las casas and indeed the town is quite charming and the journey via the great gorge was very picturesque. Sadly we were booked into Casa Mexicana which inside rather resembled the interior of a prison. The rooms we passed on the landings to our room had windows that looked into the hotel and not out so one got a great view of someone laying in their bed. Our room, the master suite, was clearly the only double in the hotel, and to be fair it was large and bright. Another plus was free wifi so thumbs up there. Where it fails is the food quality. Dinner was truly terrible. Miserable waiters, poor service, poorly cooked inedible food and expensive. I had to send my mains back as it was stone cold. Not surprisingly in the two days we were there we were the only diners. Breakfast was included but again was sub standard. This is unacceptable for a hotel that costs £100.00 plus a night.

Good news is that that their are good places to eat in town (good Italian and Lebanese)

Also the visits to the Indian Villages are very worthwhile and highly colourful. Worth going alone to see how the local catholic churches have been taken over by Mayan religion which sees Coca Cola worshipped for the bubbles and live chickens sacrificed in the church!

Htl. was full but the staff was very helpful they kept our luggage for +5 hrs. after check out.
Great location close to crafts area and Santo Domingo, 6 blocks away from the center
It is noisy due to its size and guests draguing suit cases on the tile floors Bring ear plugs.

The restaurant is very expensive and our waiter was unfriendly and snobish with us?! and rude-cold with what seems to be a trainee. The food -service is not worth their prices.

Around the block on G. Utrilla heading to St. Domingo we found a great restaurant!!
Very friendly, normal prices, great big patio and fountain, and very tasty food. It is a family run business with spiritual center and massage area

We found this hotel to be superb for its location and its suite. It was across the street from the main building on the second floor. We could not have asked for more. It was clean, spacious and very comfortable. Service at the desk and especially the restaurant on the other hand- not so good. The service in the restaurant in general was poor. food was good. We stayed six nights at the hotel but the restaurant just does not stack up. It is geared to serve small tour groups, not individual couples.

The place is nicely done -very green patio and nice colours and decor. good location next to town center and als important sights.
We got a room on the second floor overlooking the roofed patio. The hotel was then very empty, so I dont understand why they gave us a room where there was construction going on right on top on the roof. It was very loud and electricity went away for a while, when I was just about to ask for another room they stopped. still there was another weird sound -as if water where running in a pipe in the wall but not quiet- going on every few minutes or so throughout the whole night. aside from this the place is also rather loud because the patio has a glass roof and all the sounds people make when coming or going to their rooms is well echoed throught the patio. You can understand every single word. As all the rooms face the patio you can imagine just how loud it gets, I dont even want to know what ist like when the place is filled. unless you can sleep no matter whats going on outside (like my husband) I would really not recommed this place.

Hotel is well located and our room (the master suite) was quiet--except for tour groups that talk loudly on their way to breakfast. But the real bummer was that the mattress was hard as a rock. We left a day early because we were sore from such an uncomfortable sleeping experience. One of the hotel employees observed that we were not the only ones to complain about the excessively hard mattresses.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Casa Mexicana is located in the beautiful mountainous and colonial city of San Cristóbal. It is centrally located within walking distance of many historical sites. We offer you all the amenities, comforts and personal services of a fine hotel, relax in the interior sky-lit garden, enjoying the original mexican art treasures assambled here. The guest rooms all open into the gardens or private courtyards. We built the Hotel Casa Mexicana with the idea of offering our guests a little bit more than just a hotel, our goal was to create a space filled with art, folk - art and the presence of nature, which would be very Mexican. We invited our artist friends, who had been to San Cristobal beforehand, to create artistic pieces which speak about it. And we searched in all Mexico for the very special and beautiful pieces of folk - art which we display here, too. We are very satisfied with what we have realized so far and everyday we put out all our energy to still become better and have you feel relaxed here and enjoying the hotel. ... more   less
