I have been visiting El Caldero for many years. Its a must , once or twice on every visit to San Cristobal. My only problem here is deciding which soup because I like them all here. Always fresh, high quality ingredients and an excellent , filling meal for about 50 pesos. And the beans and chips and other small dishes served before the soup are also excellent. I am impressed that for many years I have seen the same senora in the kitchen. I hope she stays---she knows how to prepare soup.
For a small place, I find their website to be excellent http://www.elcaldero.com.mx/ .

Great place to sample some traditional local cuisine serving a wide variety of rustic soups with various accompaniments. Very good value, give it a try.

You can get a variety of well-priced soups here. The service is okay-- when it's crowded it's pretty slow but otherwise good. There are soups for vegetarians and meat eaters.

We love this hole in the wall soup restaurant about 1 block from the Parque Central. The Pozole Rojo is delicious and can be seasoned exactly as you like it because they bring chile powder and oregano to the table as well as onions, lettuce and radishes. They serve the pozole with a bowl full of crispy tortillas to add to the broth after you have eaten all the pork or chicken out of the broth.
They also bring an assortment of onion relishes to snack on before your soup comes that are my favorite thing to eat in San Cristobal.
The bowl of soup is huge and will definitely fill you up for the whole day.
The restaurant is packed at lunch (we had to wait for a table one day) and serves tourists and locals. Authentic and absolutely delicious. A must eat while in San Cristobal.
