Description: This small, charming restaurant has a lot going for it. Located only two blocks from historic Santo Domingo Church, and within easy walking distance of the Zocalo, La Olla is very popular with both foreign residents and visitors as well as with locals. La Olla is one of the more trendy eateries in the city, and our spotless kitchen produces a wide array of traditional Oaxacan, continental, and vegetarian foods. We pride ourselves in serving the best quality of products available, and most of our produce is grown locally and delivered to us by farmers during the week. Our coffee is locally roasted and the foods we serve are extremely fresh. We bake delicious apple strudel, chocolate cake, oatmeal cookies, vanilla flan, and more on our premises daily! All of our creations are cooked to order, prepared fresh starting when we receive your order. We use more fresh fruits and vegetables to create healthful and visually attractive dishes than any other restaurant in Oaxaca. Delicious sandwiches are served on home-baked whole wheat bread, and we even make the mayonnaise in our kitchen. There is a wide variety of healthy drinks available, using unusual combinations of fresh fruits and vegetables. The main meal of the day in Oaxaca is eaten in the afternoon. A real bargain at "La Olla" is the "Menu del día" or "Comida corrida", a full meal which changes daily, for only $90 pesos served from 1-4 pm. It includes a freshly-made salad, followed by a soup, a choice of two entrees, with tortillas or bread, and finishing with a dessert or espresso coffee. Many typical Oaxacan dishes are featured, and for a low price you can experience traditional cuisine at its very best. There is also a full a la carte menu featuring a wide selection of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The prices are moderate and the quality very high. La Olla is proud to display and promote artwork created by local, regional and international artists. Our gallery is open daily during restaurant hours. The art on display is available for sale, and the gallery selection is changed periodically.

“Go for the food”

If you're looking for any kind of ambiance, this is not your place. The food, however is very tasty and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant deck was closed, so we ate in the room where the garish bar was, turquoise walls and plain table and chairs. Zero ambiance, but their food was good for the price paid. We ordered tamales in mole, wrapped in banana leaves with a very thin masa(the way we like it)which was well-prepared and very good. With a little effort in decorating, this could be a much more enjoyable exprience.

“Not what it use to be”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

La Olla use to be one of our favorite restaurants in Oaxaca. We would eat there a few times each trip. This year our first meal was excellent, lemon chicken and the Mexican dinner salad was tasty and generous. I enjoyed my Sangria and the chocalate cake was sooo delicious. However, when we returned with friends the next night, the service was painfully slow, and the food uneven....the salad was bland and the grilled shrimp over seasoned to the point it was inedible. We heard from a local friend that La Olla had changed and the locals no longer recommend it. I would try it again, but not without checking with someone who has been following its demise.

“La Olla Restaurant 2-26-14”

My wife and I had the same daily special and, though the portions were sized nouvelle cuisine and were priced pricey, the waitstaff, the ambience, the presentation and the food were all very good.

“Good food and service”
Reviewed February 26, 2014

We ate here twice and the food was very good. It is a good variety of starters and main dishes. We had grasshoppers, tasty, and shared the main dish. Both the fish and the chicken with mole negro were delicious. The mojito was the best I had in Oaxaca and the coffee was excellent. Service is friendly and efficient. It is a small, unpretentious restaurant, one room on groundfloor, another on the first floor.

“just decent”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

you enter a quite place, or you could say " decent". The staff is friendly, but bored ( not allowed to do anything?!) or running/jumping around
the ( free) appetizer is nice, same for the cocktails. though what you miss, is mexico, because all you see is " gringo's"
the food is just decent, as is the whole experience ...
