We took a birding tour around Oaxaca City and areas South over the mountains and to the coast with Benito Hernandez in Feb. of 2015. We were thoroughly delighted with Benito's schedule, knowledge and choice of accommodations. He really aims to please and Suzanne, altho we never had the opportunity to meet her, was behind the scenes with answers to our emails. The trip was easy to book as well.
Benito also knew where to take us for whatever our needs were whether it be the local restaurants, bakery's or shopping for black pottery. You will not be disappointed.
We recently went on three Oaxaca area tours with Benito and Suzanne. We had a wonderful time. Both guides are extremely knowledgeable in the areas of archeology, nature, history, culture and more. In addition they are very personable. It was a pleasure to be with them and to see and learn so much about the area. Highly recommended
Benito Hernandez is a top-notch guide. He's incredibly knowledgeable about Oaxacan history, cultures, and architecture. We spent two wonderful days with Benito; the first was bird watching and a wonderful tour of Monte Alban, the second was a tour of the Eastern valley and Mitla (and of course, more birding). While we never saw that darn ocellated thrasher, we saw karakaras, indigo buntings, fly catchers, and so many others. Benito is really a birder's birder.
Just today, we were walking in Seattle and ran into some other birders. We started trading stories and started talking about birding in Oaxaca. The couple were raving about their guide in Oaxaca -- guess who it was? Benito, of course! We're headed back to Oaxaca in November and hope that we can go to the Sierra Norte with Benito. He was attentive, really paid attention to our interests, and made our trip wonderful. We learned a lot and can't wait to see him again.
A recent trip to Oaxaca in Mexico allowed us to meet up with Discover Oaxaca Tours and spend a total of three days with the operators - two with Benito and one with Suzanne.
Each day we travelled to different areas around Oaxaca and were amazed by the variety of arts and crafts, markets and churches, together with the historic sites of Monte Alban and Mitla.
Benito, a native of Mexico, and a very keen bird watcher, was very keen to impart all the local knowledge regarding the places visited, while also providing a new experience on his "short cut" between two locations, which happened to be a dry river bend, used extensively by the locals.
This included coming head to head with a ten ton tip truck going in the opposite direction - he won.
Benito and Suzanne offer a number of different tours any one or a number of which we are sure would suit almost all.
You're welcome! It was our pleasure to show you a sampling of all that Oaxaca has to offer and we're very glad you enjoyed your visit.
I went out with Benito Hernandez for two days. On the first day we focused on bird-watching in the Sierra around Oaxaca, and on the second day we combined bird watching with cultural and historical sites. Benito is an amazing guide - he is a local Zapotec native, speaks better English than most of us, and is steeped in BOTH the natural and the cultural history of his homeland. His font of information about the local fauna, flora, and socio-political context of nearly everything you see around you is boundless. Besides all that, he is charming, thoughtful, and flexible. I highly recommend him.
Thanks so much for the kind words! We're very glad you enjoyed your time with Benito and happy we could help make your visit to Oaxaca a memorable one.
We spent ten days in Oaxaca in April 2014, including Easter. Benito or Suzanne accompanied us around the city, to museums, to markets and to the Zapotec ruins on Monte Alban. They drove us on tours out of the city, to the home of Benito Juarez, to an exhibit of silver, to a mescal factory, several potteries, a weaver in natural dyes, an exquisite wood-carving factory and many more. As an added bonus, Benito is an avid birdwatcher (and birding tour guide) so we also got to see some amazing birds--not to mention a forest where the trees were covered with flowering air plants! We look forward to visiting again.
