“Love this place!”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

My husband and I had a GREAT time in Oaxaca and this place played a major part in it. It has everything you need, is a sanctuary from the city when you need one, lovely helpful staff, and it is fun to share breakfast with interesting people from around the world! (if you choose to) The breakfasts are things of beauty and local deliciousness and included in the price!!! Maria is so helpful, relaxed and genuine that you know she loves what she does.

Room Tip: Didn't see other rooms but Corozion (sp) was lovely. Bed was great and we slept soundly.

Maria makes me want to open my very own B&B! What a perfect place. Maria has thought of everything. Very creative, imaginitive simple, well thought out, quirky, inspiring, artistic and comfortable. We slept so well here. A nice big bed with lovley sheets, creative touches, and interesting, varied, home cooked Mexican breakfasts. Bowie the dog was gorgeous. Very friendly and quiet. I had the opportunity to meet a lovley French jewellery designer called Brigitte Huet who I had read about in my guide book who was quietly showing her designs one morning near where we ate breakfast in the b&b. She can come to meet you here too. I also bought a beautiful bracelet from another of Marias creative friends. They even have an honesty bar which was great! Very handy! A lovely roof terrace which was a nice surprise. It is also well located near the centre but not noisy. I would definitely go back and look forward to hearing news of the lovely B&B. Thank you!

Room Tip: We stayed in Caitrn which was 2 twin beds pushed together to make a double. It was a lovely big, lig...

My feelings about this B and B are more mixed than those of many of the writers here. I have been to Oaxaca several times, so have a basis for comparison. It is a lovely house, with an excellent staff and fantastic breakfasts. The den/TV room for guests' use, and the beautiful courtyard/kitchen are great amenities.
The street is indeed noisy, even by Oaxaca standards. The house is close to an intersection of two busy streets, and the sidewalks are narrow. Though it is reasonably convenient (certainly within walking distance) to the Zocalo etc., the immediate surroundings are not especially interesting. There is a dog that was around a lot during my visits (though he is not allowed in the rooms, which I enjoyed though others may not. Finally, without getting into specifics, I did not find the hostess particularly welcoming.
I found the raves a little misleading.
Oaxaca has many delightful places to stay. I'm not sure this one should be at the top of the list.

This B&B is perfect! The rooms are decorated beautifully with Mexican decor and they all have their own bathroom. Maria really loves what she is doing and you sense that in all parts of this place. There is a nice rooftop terrace to relax and a kitchen and common room with TV, bar and books available for everyone. Maria also has great recommendations for restaurants and bars that you should definately try out!

We visited Oaxaca for the traditional Guelaguetza. This B&B is a traditional Oaxacan house where you can stay at and feel in a prehispanic hacienda. All the rooms are decorated with mexican decorations. The staff is really great and servicial they really make you feel as if you were in their own home. Really had a great time!

Room Tip: Make your reservation with time cause there are less than 10 rooms

I don't usually write reviews - this is my first, and that's because El Diablo Y La Sandía is a very special place. Like the city, Oaxaca, it's just one of those places that I'll never forget.
There are only five rooms, and four of them open up to a patio where a delicious breakfast is served every morning (I particularly miss the tamales and the amazing homemade jams). The rooms are very beautifully decorated, with local handicrafts (in terms of Mexican crafts, it doesn't get any better than Oaxaca), and perfectly clean and comfortable.
There's a peaceful rooftop with bougainvilleas and a hammock that I miss.
Maria, the owner and hostess, is super-nice and offered lots of suggestions of where to go and eat in Oaxaca.
We decided to stay one more night in Oaxaca but unfortunately this place was fully booked so we had to go to another hotel, which was the same price and not as half as good as El Diablo Y La Sandía.
Made me want to go back.
Kathleen

We visited for five nights in July with our kids, ages 12 & 14. The connecting rooms were perfect. So many details made this place and our stay inviting. Small things like having umbrellas, shopping bags and sun hats available in each room were thoughtful, personal and charming. Maria offered details and suggestions as we requested and also has a chalkboard with her "can't miss" dishes and drinks throughout the city - high to low. The open courtyard where breakfast is served each morning is pretty and breakfast itself was always tasty and plentiful. We liked having the little living room to sit in at times. The location is excellent, everything is walking distance and close enough to come back and rest whenever one feels like it. The rooms could be a tiny bit hot though there are ceiling fans. Ours was a bit noisy but that is easily repaired. Screens on the courtyard windows would solve the problem of wanting more air but not wanting to invite in the mosquitos. The beds were comfortable.

We moved to a fancier B&B for the next part of our stay (Maria didn't have space for all of our time in Oaxaca) and all of us agreed without hesitation that we preferred El Diablo y La Sandía. It is simple and spare (aside from all the charming crafts everywhere) but has everything one could need and an eclectic and peaceful charm. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: We liked being in the courtyard set back from the street and, for a noisy city, our rooms were peace...
