“Excellent B&B in the historic centre”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Ollin just before Easter and had a really great stay. It’s located on a quiet street which is 2-3 short blocks from Santa Domingo (about 5 mins walk) which is perfect for exploring the historic centre of Oaxaca. The area was very quiet and felt very safe at night. The rooms are located around a courtyard and pool which is set back into the property from the street which meant that it was nice and quiet at night.

An excellent breakfast was included, the most important of all Mexican meals! Fresh juice, local coffee, fruit, bread/muffins and a hot breakfast daily - on our first day we had some exceptional chilaquiles! This is served in kitchen/dining room which gives you an great opportunity to interact with the staff and other guests if you wish. Judith (owner/proprietor) as around every day and was very helpful in organising activities or reservations and advice on sightseeing/travelling around Oaxaca.

Judith and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. English spoken fluently by many of the staff and my poor, broken attempts to speak Spanish were well received! I thought that Ollin’s idea to email in advance to ask if we wanted help organising any tours or activities was great. From this, Judith put us in touch with Karla for a private cooking lesson which was a great way to spend a day and learn a few Mexican dishes to try at home – highly recommended.

A special thanks to Judith and the team is due for their help forwarding my laundry that I managed to leave at the laundrette across the road when it closed for Easter. I think this is a great example excellence of customer service and a genuine care for their guests.

We would definitely stay again next time we are in Oaxaca and have recommended Ollin to relatives travelling later this year.

We just had a great stay of 6 nites at the Ollin. It is comfortable, clean and a nice location only a few blocks from the center of town. The breakfasts are great, and the staff and owners (Jon and Judith) are very accommodating, helpful and friendly. We had been traveling for 3 months prior to this stay so it was a welcome refuge!

Casa Ollin provided us with a simple but clean and hospitable oasis among the hustle of Oaxaca. Our host, Judith (a true Oaxacaan local), was very friendly and warmly welcomed us. She gave us helpful information about places to eat and things to do in Oaxaca and made sure we were happy with our room.

The rest of the staff were extremely friendly. Not all spoke fluent english, but enough to get by and there was always a staff member who spoke english well. We enjoyed chatting with some of the staff.

Our room was basic and small, but quite comfortable and very clean. So much so, we occasionally rested in there. It was naturally cool, requiring only a ceiling fan.

At other times we rested in the front open communal lounge. Despite the lounge being at the front of the establishment next to a fairly busy residential street, it was quiet and tranquil. The sound of the water fountain and the birds twittering were so pleasant, I recorded it on my phone to play later as a momento of our stay. We actually had to do some work one afternoon and this room was sufficiently quiet and comfortable for doing this.

The breakfasts were delicious. The cook, Sophie, made us traditional Oaxacan breakfasts that were satisfying, yet didn't leave us too full for a meal later in the day. They were simple, meaning it was easy to taste that they were made fresh, with quality ingredients. I noticed some other guests had non-mexican breakfasts to suit their tastes.

Would I recommend this place to others? Absolutely! I think it was a lovely place and extremely reasonably priced. It was wonderful to meet Judith, Jon and their staff and we hope to come back to Casa Ollin another day.

FOOTNOTE:
One activity we did while staying in Oaxaca was a cooking course. Judith of Casa Ollin helped us organise one. She listed several, but recommended we cook with Karla, who is starting her business. Although Karla has taught cooking to spanish language students and others for many years, she is starting to offer classes for english-speaking tourists. If our experience was anything to go by, it is clear Karla will do well in her business. If you want to cook in Oaxaca, we cannot recommend taking a class with Karla highly enough.

We met Karla the day before and she gave us a choice of three menus (One was vegetarian). This was the hardest part of the course as all three menus looked delicious.

She met us at 10am the next day and we walked to a nearby market, looking at many of the foods and talking about how they can be used. We bought a few small items but Karla had the vast majority of the ingredients we'd be using already at her home, washed (with sanitary water) and ready to go.

Karla's explanations were clear and given in english. She helped us with the cooking and gave us some tips but we did pretty much all the work - as we hoped! We had 6 dishes on our menu and made them all. But after explaining our love of real mexican cuisine, she let us make a couple more.

After cooking, we sat down to eat our meal and were thoroughly stuffed at the end. Karla then drove us back to our accommodation. She also gave us the recipes for the menu items we cooked, both in english and spanish.

In summary, our day of cooking with Karla was probably the biggest highlight of our stay in Oaxaca. It was a memorable experience and extremely well priced, so much so we had no hesitation if leaving a tip for her and her assistant.

Thank you Karla! Good luck with your new business and we hope to be back!

Room Tip: If you like mexican food, ask the hosts about a one-day cooking course with Karla.

Thank you stewiemagee for your kind comments. We really do strive hard to make our guests' stay an enjoyable one and it is gratifying for us when we read 5 star reviews about our Bed and Breakfast in TripAdvisor.
We have 4 patios to choose from and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed the entry patio. As you point out, although that patio is closest to the street it is still tranquil and enjoyable. That is in part because there is no bus or other heavy traffic on our street and in part because we have heavy wooden doors between the street and the patio. This same patio also has a refrigerator for the use of the guests as well as a tea station and an honor bar where the guests can sample local Mezcals.
Lastly thank you for the wonderful comments about Karla's cooking class. She has great experience as a cook but is new on the cooking class scene in Oaxaca and we are happy to recommend her. Karla is offering flexibility in giving her course in English or Spanish; will accept to give a class with only 1 student; will give her class any day of the week and at a very reasonable price. We are told that Karla is developing her own webpage and until she is online you can contact her thru our webpage at Ollin.

The casa Ollin is a breathe of fresh air in the busy city of Oaxaca. The people are warm and welcoming and the environment is open and relaxing. The food is great every morning and everyone is very accommodating. The owners Jon and Judith go out of their way to take care of your every need and make sure you feel at home. My family and I were in Oaxaca for 10 days and each day we came home to Olllin we felt as if we were walking into our home away from home.

Room Tip: The rooms on the pool side are lovely.

I've spent some wonderful days in Casa Ollin, the hosts and all the staff make really the utmost to make us feel at home. Casa Ollin is a beautiful house with a lovely interior courtyard and a nice Pool. Our room had a King size bed very comfortable with a nice balcony. The breakfast is always freshly cooked, real Oaxacan delicious food. It is the perfect starting point to explore and have a great time in this lovely and relaxed Mexican city.

My wife & I spent 5 nights in the Oaxaca Ollin in March. We had such a wonderful stay. The breakfasts were varied, excellent and always fun due to the other like-minded guests. Our room was charming as were the staff. The service was personal, far better than staying in a hotel. I would thoroughly recommend the Ollin. I also developed a taste for the local mezcal while I was there. They operate an 'honesty' system with a number of different types & qualities.

Spent a wonderful week at Casa Ollin in early April. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived, and our room overlooking the swimming pool was perfect. Very comfortable bed, and the room had a light and airy feel to it. We loved sitting out on the balcony in the afternoon, listening to the birds singing in the lush greenery surrounding the beautiful courtyard and pool.

Lots to see and do in Oaxaca, and it was Semana Santa during our stay, so there were processions and other celebrations going on. Judith was wonderful helping us figure out where and when to go places, and especially finding our way around.

Breakfasts were delicious Oaxacan dishes prepared in the lovely kitchen and served at a shared table. The menu was never repeated the whole week we were there, so we got to try lots of savory treats. We found the other guests at Casa Ollin to be pleasant and interesting breakfast companions.

I highly recommend this B&B, and hope to return someday.
