“Up on the roof”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2014

Just got back from 10 wonderful days in Mexico, which began at the Hotel Azucenas. This is a delightful spot, within easy walking distance of virtually any point in the city but just far enough removed from the hubbub to feel restful. I kept thinking of the movie A Room With a View, both because the rooftop terrace affords a spectacular view of Oaxaca and the hills beyond, but also because the other guests all seemed to be people of substance and intrigue, the kind of travelers who tend to venture off the beaten path that make you want to linger longer on the terrace to hear their stories and get their suggestions for places to explore around the city. The staff is warm and well-informed and go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one. Breakfasts were fresh and bountiful, flowers brightened every corner, and the mosaic work throughout the inn especially beautiful. You experience a real neighborhood, not a tourist zone, but once inside tranquility prevails. Our room was very quiet, and clean as a whistle. I don't think you'll find a better or more authentic place to perch in Oaxaca, nor a better roof with a view.

Room Tip: Our room was very quiet. The beds are VERY firm, a plus for some but I'm hoping there might be a...

Hola Wanderingwretch – it was wonderful to have you with us for 10 days! It’s true that our terrace is a great place for relaxing…whether that means taking yourself off with a book…or meeting other travelers from all over the world. We get GREAT guests!!
The neighborhood is great, too! A very special little café, La Bizcocheria, with homemade goodies – just down the street; a place on the corner that opens at 8 pm every night to serve homemade tostadas and quesadillas filled with your choice of about 10 fillings (try “chileajo vegetables”); or the newer Pan-Am Panaderia (bakery) – baking filled croissants, muffins and breads…
AND FOR THOSE WHO PREFER A SOFTER BED – we now have “bed toppers” that can be added to your mattress!
Hope to see you again, soon! Donna

My husband and I recently returned from our second stay at the Azucenas. The hotel is fabulous! First the basics: the rooms are clean and comfortable. Our rooftop room was quiet and our friends, of the main floor reported that hers was too. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location put us I easy walking distance of everything we wanted to do. The basics however are not enough to describe this hotel. The rooftop garden is beautiful, with a fabulous view of town. The breakfast buffet and honor system frig give the feeling of staying at a friend's home. The rooftop also creates a friendly atmosphere, inviting conversations with fellow travelers. The owner, Donna, and her staff answered 100 questions and helped us make arrangements for several special outings that added so much to our visit. We hope to return to Oaxaca and we will stay at the Azucenas when we do.

This is a wonderful place to stay. It doesn't have TV - but does have free wi-fi - it doesn't have a swimming pool and the bathroom isn't all glass panelling but....... it is distinctively Oaxaca! Formerly a series of shops - postcards of contemporary photos show the building in the 30s - the 8 ground floor bedrooms at Hotel Azucenas are built around a central courtyard featuring a fountain, bougainvillea and poinsettia, not to mention four tortoises. The two other bedrooms are on the roof top with its lovely view over the town, its breakfast bar and its colourful garden dotted with umbrella-shaded tables. From the welcoming streetscape, the terra cotta colours continue inside and are complemented by lively mosaic work.

As well as character, Azucenas has all the essentials for comfort, very helpful staff, and a great location not far from the zocalo or the plaza San Domingo but quiet. Nancy's right about the lack of traffic noise.

I thought this was incredible value for money.

I just spent 10 days at Hotel Azucenas. This is my second stay here, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a charming, well-located and well-run hotel. Located near the zocalo, it is easy and safe to walk about to markets, museums, churches or restaurants. The staff is very helpful and able to arrange tours, trips and transportation. This is a small hotel with a convivial atmosphere. Breakfasts on the rooftop garden are simple but delicious and the garden is a lovely place to sit quietly or meet with friends to watch the sun set and the moon come up over the mountains. Flowers abound here ! The building is stone with an internal staircase so sounds can travel, but it is certainly not noisy. My room ( #1) was on the street, but with the well-designed, sound-dampening windows and shutters I slept very well. The "white noise" machines and ear plugs offered by the hotel were unnecessary, but available. The rooms are charming, clean, and comfortable. This is not an American motel - there is no TV. There is internet and a fountain with well-loved turtles. There are plenty of smiles from staff and Donna, the owner, is often around - laughing and chatting with her guests. She arranged to take a group of us to a great dinner at a very fine local restaurant, which was so far from the typical tourist path that we would not have found it ourselves. This hotel is more like staying with friends. . . a great place to stay !

I spent a week at Hotel Azucenas in early February this year. The hotel is bright, comfortable, well run, clean and friendly. The price is excellent at about $50.00 a night. The staff is excellent and the owner is frequently on site. However, the staff do a great job even whether the boss is there or not. The service was consistent among the staff, which I appreciated.
Any arrangements I made through the hotel or recommendations they gave me were both excellent service and value for money. These included a pedicure (Ricardo), a massage (Angela, the masseuse came to my room), information on the city, sites surrounding the city and transportation to the airport.
I was very happy with my stay, which was split between room 8 and room 2, both on the ground floor. My preference was room 2 as it was a bit larger than 8. Room 8 was also a little noisier however I didn't find the noise a problem and I slept very well in both rooms. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs just in case. They have very good beds...firm. Other reviewers have mentioned noise: Rooms facing the street will be noisier however, it's not a really busy street. There is a school across from the hotel. Many rooms face the courtyard so are quieter and rooms facing the side street are also quieter because the side street doesn't connect to much so...little traffic.
The breakfast is optional and not included in the room price, the cost was approximately $4. and was delicious.
I'll definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: If a double bed is too small for you, they have two rooms with two twins beds and a kit to make them...

Hi CanadaSusan – Wow, thanks! And, we loved you!
It’s true…we have wonderful staff…several of whom have been with us for 10 – 14 years.
Concierge service – lots of help with information and services…we try to stay up to date on what’s on and available in the city…so you can see and get to know a Oaxaca beyond the guide books…
And…for those not accustomed to a Mexican level of noise …we’re glad to provide earplugs and white noise machine.
We’d love to see you again, Donna and the staff of Hotel Azucenas

There's no star rating for this hotel. It's not bad (you get what you pay for) IF you're looking for a 2-star hotel. IF you're looking for a 3-star hotel or higher, you've come to the wrong place.
Room doors are not correctly sealed and you can hear noise from the neighbours easily. Hotel personnel starts cleaning at 7:00 am so you may be woken up early.
Location, as many say, is far to the center, but close to walk to it. Terrace is beautiful.
If you don't mind to be in a small bare room and want something cheap, this is the right place for you, but have no high expectation.

Room Tip: Avoid room 5. It's on the ground floor so it's noisy.

Estimado Viajante,
Thanks for writing and mentioning our beautiful terrace and handy location at a nice walk from the center.
Our day time staff arrives at 7 am and immediately starts preparing the buffet breakfast and watering our extensive gardens. And everyone is very aware of keeping as quiet as possible…this is a small open plan older house! I’m not sure what else you might have heard at that hour.
It’s unfortunate that you didn’t notice that our rooms have handmade furniture and that both rooms and baths are decorated with traditional talavera ceramic tiles. Or that our turn of the century building – restored by one of Oaxaca’s best known architects, Roberto Aranda Castillo - is highlighted with 1930’s Guadi-esq mosaic details through-out. It is truly a treasure.
It’s too bad that our hotel didn’t suit you…as it obviously has many others…many of whom make their reservations a year in advance.
We very much hope that you enjoy your future travels. Donna

This hotel fits perfectly with the Oaxacan scene....nestled on the edge of the historic district the location is up a slight hill so the terrace, full with potted plants. affords fabulous views of the city and nearby majestic stone church. This is a wonderful place to drink morning coffee or cold beer at the end of the day. Both of which are readily available (the beer you can charge to your room) in the adjacent kitchen. I really appreciated their quick and readily available internet service.
Rooms are very clean, staff friendly and accommodating and the price can't be beat only 6-7 minutes walking to the Zocalo. I especially appreciated the freshly brewed decaf coffee each morning (of course they make regular too)! Now that's not something you can find easily in Mexico.

Room Tip: Keep in mind some rooms do not have windows that you can open. This concerned me at first but once t...

Dear Outfitter – Thanks for commenting on the great views from our rooftop terrace – with or without a good Oaxacan coffee (or beer) in hand…Mexican decaf also available!
And you’re right - city noise is everywhere in every city in Mexico (I live in a “quiet” suburb…full of barking dogs, late night loud music and early morning clanging bells. ) But we’re in a quiet area of the city…and we do everything possible to help you enjoy it
Gracias! Donna
