My friends and I used this hotel the night before we left Oaxaca. The price was reasonable, the staff very helpful, it had a boutique hotel feel to it, nicely decorated, the rooms had ceiling fans which was fine for April. The rooftop terrace and do it yourself kitchen was a plus.
A word of caution, if you have a car, which we did, you will find it very hard to find a parking place anywhere near this hotel or any in this location which is a few blocks from the city square. You are on your own and many people double park on side-streets until 10 or 11 at night, when places become available ( if you are lucky ). The hotel can arrange for a taxi to the airport but it is cheaper to get one on the street.

Hi tpaul…and thanks for writing, and for the compliments!
You’re right - parking spaces are hard to find throughout the centre. We do sometimes have a spot available in front of the hotel, and there are 2 parking garages within 2 blocks of the hotel.
Oaxacans have made a fine art of double parking.
All the best! Donna

We enjoyed a lovely stay for New Year's week at the well run Hotel Azucenas. Prior to our stay, the staff was very responsive to our queries. By booking about 2 months in advance, we were able to snag room #10 on the beautifully decorated roof terrace. During our stay, the staff was extremely helpful and always happy to help us with a restaurant recommendation to sample the breathtaking local cuisine.

The hotel's location was an easy and safe walk to most parts of Oaxaca City including the zocalo. The hotel has been around for a while, so it was easy to arrange for our private tour guide to pick us up.

We even spent new year's day on the roof happily basking in the sunshine while drinking some excellent local mezcal.

Room Tip: Room #10 is by itself and set admist the lovely rooftop garden

Hi IdaFats
We wish we had ten #10s!! BUT people enjoy the other rooms as well – and EVERYBODY has access to the roof garden…
Thanks for your kind words…and we’re always ready with recommendations and assistance. For those who haven’t been to the hotel yet, there is now more detailed information in the About Oaxaca tab of our website, and on facebook Hotel Azucenas.
Thanks, from Donna and the staff at the hotel

My partner and I stayed here for a few nights at the end of March. We found the hotel was excellent, great staff, nice rooms, fantastic rooftop terrace, good location. We read the other reviews which complain about issues with road noise - we had the road side room and it was very quiet - we can only presume other guests couldn't figure out to close the window? I also read the review about the rooms needing A/C - they don't - we stayed in two rooms and both had fans which kept the rooms cool. This is a lovely place to base yourself in Oaxaca, it's close to everything but also far enough away that you get peace and quiet.

Hi Andrew M,
Thanks for your kind words and for commenting about noise in the hotel. With 13 years of experience and 1000’s of guests from all kinds of settings all over the world…we now realize that to some extent people’s perception of “noisiness” depends a lot on what they’re used to. Our windows and courtyard are open…so one hears people noise, street noise and sometimes the city.
We’re glad you enjoyed your stay! Donna

Azucenas offers an excellent hands-on three hour foray into the secrets of making Oaxacan Tamales de Mole y Pollo con Hoja de Platano (Black Mole and Chicken in Banana Leaf) and Tamales de Frijol con Hoja de Maiz (Black Bean with “Saint’s Leaf” Tamales Wrapped in Corn Husks). Additionally we prepared Salsa para los Tamales de Frijol (Salsa for the Bean Tamales) that consisted of chile, tomatillos and garlic clove.

There are many all day cooking classes offered in Oaxaca that begin with a trip to the local market and a considerable amount of time doing prep work. Our instructor, Sra. Clara, had already purchased all the ingredients, prepared her own mole and boiled the black beans. We moved directly into boiling chicken, preparing the two different masa mixtures, and boiling the ingredients for the salsa.

I was grateful that it was only a class of two students – this may be the minimum to hold class. We were allowed to document the process with pictures and really do each step in the assembly of the tamales. Watching an instructor mixing consommé, lard and water into the masa to achieve a “cream of wheat” consistency is reinforced when you get to put your hands in the pan and feel the required texture.

The class concludes with the steaming of the tamales in a pot lined with corn husks and topped with banana leaves while the instructor cleaned up “our” mess. When the tamales were done, we were offered all the tamales we could eat along with a beverage of choice (beer or mezcal were our choices) and the friendly hotel staff joined in for a late lunch. As we prepared to leave, we were each handed a plate piled with tamales to take home as well as a printed copy of the recipes.

For some, Sra. Clara’s limited English may be a concern. However, even with my rudimentary Spanish I had no problem communicating and asking questions.
For me, this tamale cooking class was four thumbs up!

Room Tip: Take room number 10 on the terrace if it is available.

Hi DLA Alaska – we were so glad that you had the opportunity to join our new-ish cooking class – open to hotel guests and the public (which really means friends of the hotel!). As far as we know it’s the only class in the area that concentrates on tamale-making, which are not usually included in cooking class menus as they take longer to make.
We hold the classes on Tuesdays (usually), whenever we have the minimum of 2 students (maximum 4). Cost is $400. pesos per person (about $24.00 USD) and this includes the 3 hour session, a complimentary beer, mescal or soft drink and all the tamales you can eat. The meal is often joined by hotel staff and the occasional other guests which makes for a great multi-lingual occasion.
You’re right - the mostly Spanish class doesn't seem to hamper Sra. Clara’s students. Most of us learn to cook by watching anyway…
Just call, email or drop by the hotel to register…we hope to see you again, DLA…and anyone else who’d like to attend, Donna

We stayed for 6 nights here and had a lovely time in Oaxaca. The rooms were clean and comfortable and we stayed close to the terrace. You do get hot and there is a fan in the rooms.
Donna is very helpful and little touches are thought about like providing stamps and a post box. They help and recommend places to eat and excursions.

The terrace is just so lovely and colourful, a great place to rest and catch some sun! The breakfasts each morning are fresh and freshly squeezed orange juice is lovely.

Everyone is very helpful and for the price it's a great place to stay.
