“Celebrating Day of the Dead at Hotel Azucenas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2011

We started our trip with Donna, the owner, inviting us to the local market to get things to make a Day of the Dead altar at the hotel. It was a wonderful way to meet the other guests and get into the spirit of this very special holiday. The staff was amazingly helpful and knowledgeable, helping us with everything from finding a local professional photographer (see photos below) to recovering our lost luggage. The rooms are charming as well as comfortable. You feel safe and secure within the compound that is Hotel Azucenas. Breakfast is served daily on the roof garden, it was a great start to each day and an opportunity to meet the other guests. We love this place and will always stay here when visiting Oaxaca.

Room Tip: #10!!! Away from the street. Up on the roof. Felt very private.

Hi Cynthia W - AND YOU WERE GREAT GUESTS - you got involved in everything, met lots of people and spread the fun!
The DAY OF THE DEAD is the most culturally interesting holiday in Oaxaca - beautiful, inspiring and exciting. And helping to shop for and decorate an altar is a wonderful way to experience it...
We're looking forward to seeing you again! Donna

We so enjoyed staying at the Hotel Azucenas in Oaxaca. The staff were so warm and welcoming and our room was very clean and comfortable. On one morning,we rose early and watched the sun rise over a panoramic view of Oaxaca while having a delicious breakfast on the rooftop terrace, beautiful! This hotel is within walking distance of nearly all the city sites & markets. I look forward to another stay in Oaxaca at the lovely Hotel Azucenas.

Hi Susan - thanks for mentioning our terrace... I originally picked this house to become a hotel because of the view it would have from the roof: the surrounding mountains, Soledad and San Jose churches (one block away), the dome tops of the ex-Convento Santo Domingo...and a friendly neighborhood just below our walls...

My partner and I stayed at the Hotel Azucenas for a visit to Oaxaca for Fiesta de Muertos, and couldn't imagine a better home-base! The hotel was lovely and full character, from the tortugas in the courtyard fountain to the roof-top terrace, an oasis of tranquility and esthetic pleasure. The staff were without exception professional and gracious, and helped make our stay feel personal. The hotel is walking-distance from almost anything one would want to do while in Oaxaca, and walking-distance to buses for further excursions, making it extremely convenient. My favourite part of the day was relaxing on the terrace in the late afternoon with friends, old and new. I am hesitant to say too much more about how wonderful Hotel Azucenas and its staff are, in case it becomes too popular for us to stay there again, but anyone planning to visit Oaxaca (when I'm not going to be there!) would find a comfortable, pleasurable home here.

This small, Canadian-run hotel in a colonial-style building is filled with loads of charm. The rooms are small but spotlessly clean. The staff is friendly and efficient, always ready to help foreigners arrange travel, restaurant outings and tours. The Crown jewel here is the spacious rooftop deck which offers a panoramic view of much of the city as well as providing an honour-system bar. We have been four times now and will undoubtedly return again.

Room Tip: Quietest rooms are on the lower floor with windows facing the interior rather than the street.

Hola Pinombre! We love it when our guests return!! They walk in the door as friends, and usually know many of our staff, many of whom have been with us for years...
I'm glad you made use of our honour system bar - it means you can have what you want...whenever you want it! And it says a lot about the kind of guests we have that this systems work beautifully for us!
Hasta pronto (Until soon)! Donns

I can't stress how much we enjoyed staying at Hotel Azucenas after finding it on Trip Advisor... the staff were incredibly friendly, the breakfasts were delicious (fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread, served on the hotel's beautiful terrace), and the room - while simple - was comfortable and included everything we needed. The hotel is close to the centre of town (just 5 minutes walk to the Zocalo) and the rates were very competitive. We ended up spending a lot of our time in Oaxaca in the hotel (mainly relaxing in the sun on the terrace) and if we ever return to Oaxaca we'll head straight back!

Our first impression upon arriving was terrific - we were tired but were welcomed warmly by the front desk staff. The decor is beautiful and very comfortable. Rooms were clean and comfortable. The location is good - within easy walking distance of the Zocalo but away from the noise and fray. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was ample and good - it included yogurt, bread, cereal, fruit, cheese, tea, and coffee. The kitchen on the terrace is open all the time and soft drinks, beer, tea and coffee are available on an honor system. The terrace is one of the nicest parts of the hotel - very comfortable with a great view of the city. All in all a wonderful experience for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Room 6 is downstairs and has a window that looks over the courtyard. Very pleasant.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Azucenas for 10 days and it was everything we expected and more. Perfect for us…it was a five minute walk to all the city sites, restaurants and entertainment. It was also a great “home base” for us as we toured neighboring areas (up to the mountain tops and down to the sea shores). The staff and manager are friendly, helpful and speak several languages (their English is a lot better than my Spanish!). The hotel is charming, clean and a remarkable value. Diverse and cosmopolitan guests add to the color.

Room Tip: We loved the room upstairs off terrace
