Great B&B in the heart of the prettiest city in Mexico

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 3, 2013
This is a lovely spot very conveniently located. The breakfasts were fantastic works of art and the hosts were wonderful. Very authentic Mexican atmosphere made this a romantic site. Nora took us on 2 personalized tours which were fantastic. I've been to this city before and can return often and discover new things. Nora's knowledge of the area was very instructive. We definitely will return.

I love Oaxaca, and the Casa de mis Recuerdos, and the family that runs it.

I started going to this place because my mother (now 92) went there 7 or 8 times over the years, and always brought back fabulous pictures and reviews. I have now visited three times, and have stayed in two different properties - both fabulous for different reasons. Mis Recuerdos itself is like a secret hideaway in the city - the pictures do NOT do it justice. The family welcomes you truly as if you are a guest in their home, but with the privacy of a lovely hotel.

And, the food, the food, the food. The breakfasts are gorgeous - and if you take Nora Valencia's cooking classes, you will eat things that spoil you forever for other food!

We also stayed at Casa Jalatlaco - which from the outside looks like nothing - a doorway in a small cobblestone street. Inside, is a gorgeous house, a small guesthouse and a lovely garden, with a huge tree in the middle and a fountain. With only 3 guestrooms it is quieter than Mis Recuerdos - a pro or con, depending on your preference. Lots more guests from all over the world at Mis Recuerdos, but a sense of quiet and peacefulness at Jalatlaco that is fabulous.

Several of the family members speak excellent English - William Gutierrez, Nora's husband, is actually American (his father came to the US from Oaxaca to study at Columbia, met William's mom and stayed), so he can help with anything that gets complicated.

We spend every year dreaming of the next time we can go. Next visit, we are trying the apartments!

Room tip: Not all the rooms have AC. If this is important to you, ask. We slept fine without it. All the rooms are pretty. The best room I've seen is the upstairs room at Jalatlaco, though I loved staying in the casita on that property as well.

We were so happy to have found this quiet, peaceful, and delightful gem of a hotel. The care and attention to the rooms, the food and the gardens reflects the care we felt in the 10 lovely days we had there. After the bustle of the city, coming home was wonderful. Heartfelt thanks to all!

With these words, Conchita welcomed us into her beautiful home. Our room was quiet, spotless and spacious, and did actually feel like it was our own for 8 nights in Oaxaca City. What a sheer delight to step into the safety of a walled garden and the comfort of a very private room, colourfully and tastefully decorated and with a bright and peaceful outlook. Early morning we'd hear breakfast being prepared, and from that moment on we were in anticipation of what delicious meal was about to be served. Always fresh pastilles, coffee, tea (and traditional Oaxaca chocolate, though I didn't realise this until the last morning when some other travellers requested it), then a full cooked meal to get us on our way. This B&B is in a great location, in the Centro, and close to many terrific restaurants and beautiful attractions. The cobbled streets are wonderful to just wander all day. Be aware that some of the Oaxacan restaurants recommended are trying a bit too hard with the fusion - we just wanted fresh and traditional, which abounds, but is sometimes a little overshadowed by places that push their own version of nouvelle cuisine, so ask Conchita and Nora specifically about the restaurants, and check the reviews. The business side of staying at La Casa was professional, kind and helpful. One thing we'd like is to be able to make an early morning cup of tea or coffee in the room or courtyard, since we were always up early, and couldn't for the life of us find a cafe open before eight-thirty or nine. Otherwise a delightful stay and thoroughly recommended.

Room tip: The Colibri room was really quiet and had its own bathroom. Very nice.

Beautiful place, delicious breakfast and excellent service. I just loved it. The owners were very kind to us and very helpful. I highly recommend staying over at La Casa de mis recuerdos. We had a lovely time in Oaxaca. It's one of the most beautiful places in Mexico.

Room tip: All the rooms are beautiful

This B&B is outstanding. Gorgeous house, beautifully decorated, great rooms, stunning breakfasts and the best margaritias in Mexico. A different breakfast everyday and each a taste treat. The hosts are very helpful and I am only sorry to have missed the opportunity for a cooking class. The location is perfect for exploring the city. I wrote about the experience in a New Zealand newspaper. Check it out on http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/features/lifestyle/at-the-table/6946707/Delighting-the-senses

Room tip: Our room was in the front so there was street noise but nothing to bad and the room was excellent
