“Artifact timeline of Oaxaca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2012

This was my favorite attractions of Oaxaca. Many artifacts from Monte Alban have been relocated here, including the turquoise skull. The museum is set up in a timeline format -- the audio tour was helpful in describing the objects and giving historical information. The artifacts range from millenia-old, to modern cultural festival objects. Each period is explained in-depth, both visually, in Spanish, and through the audio tour (available in English). There are also great arial views of the Botanical Gardens. Fun for adults, but might be less interactive than many children prefer, although some of the artifacts are cool for all ages!

“Confusion between this and another museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2012

This IS the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca. It used to be called the Museo Regional de Oaxaca once upon a time, but no more. And it certainly is not housed in a building once thought to have been owned by Cortes, as the description above says. That's the MACO (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Oaxaca) and it was never owned by Cortes.

But to get on to the review. The building itself is worth the visit, although it's actually terribly unsuited to be a museum. Little monk cells don't make for great display spaces. If you can overlook that fact, the artifacts on display give you a very good idea of the history of the cultures of Oaxaca. Make sure to poke your head into the Francisco de Burgoa library as well. You'll be impressed by the number of very old books they have there.

“Essential overview of Oaxacan history and culture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

I made a mistake! My previous review was actually of this museum, not the Museo de las Culturas. Please make the change.

“Great overview of Oaxacan Indian culture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

This museum, next to the Santo Domingo church, provides an essential introduction to the varied and spectacular culture, history and crafts of the many Indian tribes in the state of Oaxaca.
