Owner description: The Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca exhibits hundreds of live plant species, all native to Oaxaca. Planting began in 1998 with plants coming from different regions in the state of Oaxaca; such as arid, humid, low tropical and high mountainous temperate zones. The garden represents the broad diversity of geological formations, types of vegetation and climates that characterize Oaxaca.

“Amazing--must go!”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

The tour of the garden is a tour of Oaxaca's history, from the first cultivation of squash and corn thousands of years ago to modern-day making of mezcal and tequila. Not only did we learn a great deal from the English-speaking guide (formerly of Canada and the U.S.), but we enjoyed the setting--in some places lovely and relaxing and, in others, dramatic and elegant. Wear a hat and bring water!

“Highlight of the trip!”
Reviewed June 29, 2013 via mobile

We loved it! Tour in English was for about 90 min and our guide walked us thru the history of the place, all the plants and their use in local cuisine , every day life, medicine . The Garden is interseting and not only because if has a huge variety of the plants, but also because of the arcitecture, design, history of it. It is a must in my opinion and gpod introduction to Oaxaca. P.S. if uou dont have much time in Oaxaca, you can see some portion of it from the museum at Santo Domingo, although its not the same...

“Two Hectares of Gardens and cactai which grow in Oaxaca”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

Even though is it a small area, it shows the Oaxaca plants with their medicinal and culinary uses to people of the area and their ancestors. The garden is located in some historic part of town and was designed and rescued by two native artists. I was advised afterwords, to go to the Centro Cultural de Santo Domingo and pay for the entrance ticket and that includes the garden. While the entrance to the garden is 50 pesos if the tour is in Spanish and 100 pesos, if in English or other languages. Be advise, one cannot observe the plants and walk around without a tour guide.

“Absolutely a must-see!”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

The ethnobotanical garden has a wide variety of indigenous and native plants and trees from all over Mexico, with an emphasis on Oaxaca State. There is an English language tour, and our guide (Diego) was outstanding, a fount of knowledge about the flora, avifauna and history of the gardens and Oaxaca.
