Owner description: La Cocina Oaxaquena is a cooking school devoted exclusively to Oaxacan cuisine and specializing in local dishes. The Chef Instructor Gerardo offers comprehensive hands-on cooking classes in a sunny traditionally decorated Mexican kitchen. Two 5 hours cooking classes are available everyday at 9am or 3pm. Pick up and return from your hotel. Price of the class MX$800.00 (USD$60.00) per person.

The opportunity to go through the market with a gastronomically knowledgeable local person was invaluable. Both my husband and I got a lot out of that experience. Gerardo gave us the choice of the Mercado Abastos or the Mercado Benito Juarez for the tour. We chose Abastos as it's somewhat off the tourist route and we thought it might be more authentic. We chose well.
Gerardo's family were a delight. We were immediately comfortable in their kitchen, learned a lot and were treated like honoured guests.
The locale for the cooking class was in a 'meet my family' Mexican home; fully equiped and wonderfully laid out.
Service was great start to finish...from booking until our drop off at our B & B.
Dinner ended with the traditional Mezcal and optional chapulines.

“Authentic & fun!”

We loved this experience. From correspondence on email to inviting us into their home, the family were delightful and the class and trip to the market were really interesting. We made mole negro which is by far the tastiest we have tried and learned lots about Mexican life and cooking. If we were here for longer we'd do another class!

“Fun learning experience from market to table”

Geraldo and his family made us so welcome in their home. Everyone got to participate in the preparation of a delightful Oaxacan dinner.
We enjoyed everything from the market tour to the consuming g of our wonderful meal
It was excellent value for money.

“Amazing learning opportunity, from buying the food, to eating it!”

The Pinelo family welcomed us into their home and kitchen with such grace. As a first year culinary student, I found everything very fascinating. The market tour was thorough in its details and the variety of food was amazing and very delicious. I can't wait to try the recipes out and experiment with them. It was well worth the time out of my holiday for tho terrific learning experience.

“Cooking the Oaxacan Way”

The night before a frenetic visit to Oaxaca, I desperately called around to several cooking schools to find out if they would accept me for a class the following morning - no luck. Not only did Gerardo call back, he and Socorro set up a special afternoon cooking class just for one. Like others, we visited the markets, picked out some onions here, chillies there, sampled some grasshoppers and then headed back to the Pinelo family home. Together we made several wonderful dishes - including one of my new favourites: Aztec Soup. We spent several happy hours cleaning, chopping, grinding, stirring, stuffing, frying and tasting. The end results, served up with home-made margarita's more than made my heart happy. My mom, the special dinner guest loved the chicken stuffed chillies. We left, several hours after hour class-time officially ended with recipes, great memories and a sense that the Pinelo family run much more than a business - they welcome you into their Oaxacan home.
