A friend and I went to Oaxaca to study Spanish for two weeks. The master suite (large room at the front of the two story 7 room hotel) was perfect for us. Much larger than the average hotel room. The staff was friendly and helpful at all times. They recommended a charming and knowledgeable guide whom we engaged for all day excursions in the Valley of Oaxaca. His name is Jose Maria Brena Morales of Colors of Oaxaca.
The room is decorated in a spartan Mexican style....a lot of white. We felt that they could have raised the visual impact by using some of the bold colors of Mexico for accent pieces. The white tiled floors are accented with oriental carpets...how about some of the wonderful handwoven carpets from nearby Teotitlan? And fresh flowers in the room would be a nice touch, especially since they can be purchased on the street or in the markets for a couple of dollars only.
Since the hotel is small, there is no restaurant or bar, but they use a nearby restaurant to provide room service (acceptable but not exciting food). However, it is a 3-5 minute walk to the Zocalo where there are a variety of excellent restaurants and there is a neighborhood taqueria right around the corner.
Overall, a good experience if you are looking for a very nice and quiet hotel, conveniently located to the historic center of the city.
