This is a great place to eat. The food is truly world-class. It is because of places like this one that you can truly say that Oaxaca is on the global culinary map.

We visited Origen a year ago and they had just opened. Now el chef Rudolfo has fine tuned his menu and has put together some dishes that were absolutely delicious. The restaurant itself is a cute little spot with an courtyard with tables, and several interior rooms where cooking classes are offered by both Rudolfo and Alejandro Ruiz, the owner of Casa Oaxaca. We were served by a gracious young guy, who was extremely enthusiastic over the favourites on the menu. Between our group of 5 we ordered a scallop and pork tenderloin dish - delicious, a goat confite, - excellent, a turkey with a mole rojo, and a pork dish that was superb. The wine list is edited and they now have some excellent Mexican wines from Baja and Ecinada that are reasonable and very drinkable. All in all highly recommended restaurant.

Just off the zocalo on Hidalgo is this gem of a restaurant, Origen. The premise of the food is based on using excellent and fresh ingredients referenced in the Oaxacan culinary tradition in contemporary, innovative ways. The food however, does not get lost in the innovation. Rather, it remains real and really delicious. I highly recommend the culinary experience at Origen, and I will return on numerous occasions to experience the dishes Chef Rodrigo Castellanos creates.

We found Origen by accident. We were walking around and it seemed like a cute place. It was empty, but the menu seemed interesting (its expensive). Wine menu is not good, could be improved. The food was delicious, a new interpretation of Oaxacan cuisine. I don't know if the place will be around much longer, I guess they might need to lower the prices a bit and to have better publicity. Overall, a good dining experience.

This was the best meal we had in Mexico. Everything we ate was beautiful, the service was excellent, the chef was accessible and extremely professional and all in all we had a very memorable evening. A special mention must go to the goat- one of the hallmarks of great cooking is to turn modest ingredients into taste sensations and I will never look at a goat again without remembering just how good they can be! Highly recommended
