Yves was our guide for a 2 day hike in Tehuacan-Cuicatlan. The hike was amazing . On day 1, we visited ruins that allow you a sense of the lives of the people in the valley several hundred years before Christ. Our other guide Santos was very helpful explaining the plants and artifacts we encountered.

On day 2 we went bird watching for Macaws. The view of the canyon was stunning but the view of the birds was even more visceral and beautiful. On day 2 our assistant guide Gregorio discussed plants and other local animals in the canyon.

Finally it didn’t hurt that Yves and Claudia’s dog had such great energy. It was so infectious. Her energy made you excited to be on the trail as she explored all of the different sights and sounds.

I highly recommend this hike. I would add please be very honest with yourself and your guides about your fitness level. This hike is not an easy walk in the park but can be done by most relative fit people. There are no bathrooms along the trail. You need to carry a small backpack with you that has water and small snacks, like crackers or dried fruit.

If you like hiking in nature, you can't miss Tierraventura's tours. Seriously. We did Santiago Apoala and Yves was our tour guide. Yves is knowledgable and has a deep respect for Mexican culture. He's also funny! As for the tour, I think Santiago Apoala is outside the range of typical tourist activities. You definitely need a local to guide you through the mountains that surround Santiago. The results were long hikes in the beautiful hills and waterfalls that surrounds Santiago Apoala. The town, Santiago, is also beautiful and it was great meeting the locals! If you like nature, this tour is a MUST. You'll feel super happy and relaxed –– as one does after a long hike in nature –– by the end of the 2-day tour. You'll also get to experience a side of Oaxaca that is unique and rather difficult to see.

My friend and I both consider our day trip with Tierraventura to have been one of our favorite days on our trip in Mexico. San Miguel del Valle is a beautiful area in the Sierra Norte mountains near Oaxaca City. Yves, accompanied by his dog Queta, picked up a group of 6 in Oaxaca City in the morning, and we were joined by a local guide as we headed up to the mountains. The starting and ending points for the beautiful Cueva Iglesia hike are two of the Pueblos Mancomunados, though the majority of the day is spent on San Miguel del Valle land. Highlights of the day included the canyon rock formations, look-out points, a meadow valley, and the homestyle meal at a comedor in Cuajimoloyas. Both of our guides were knowledgeable about the native plants of the Sierra Norte, a curious combination of what I had previously thought of as mountain and desert plants that did not grow in the same environment.

Would absolutely recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys hiking or is interested in the landscape or ecology of Oaxaca. I would love to do an overnight trip with Tierraventura if I am ever visiting again.

Went with my wife and two teenage sons on this tour from Oaxaca to the coast and we all had a fantastic time. Yves was knowledgeable and a great person to travel with. We were very concerned about getting from Oaxaca to the coast due to the windy mountainous road, and because of this tour it became the highlight of our trip. Learned a ton, had fun adventures, ate great, and was able to see some amazing sites that we never would have known about.

We had a fantastic time on the two day trip to Santiago Apoala with Claudia and Yves. Our 8 year old son joined us for this magical trip into the Mixtec Valley. The hike was split into two parts, the first day we hiked through the canyon into the valley. We had a nice lunch followed by some rest and a dinner that was arranged for us. We were made to feel at home and we enjoyed meeting the people of the village. The following morning we had a hearty breakfast and hiked down to the waterfall. While the water was rather cold it was a beautiful setting and the hike was not too difficult.

We are extremely appreciative of Claudia and Yves's company and the extra work they did to help us navigate some of the street closures. We would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to spend time in the outdoors.
