“Pueblo Mancomunados - stunning hike through mountain villages”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

We did a beautiful 2 day overnight hike through Pueblo Mancomunados, visiting three villages and staying in very comfortable cabins in Llatuvi village (located spectacularly on top of a hill overlooking the valleys). We were accompanied by Yves and Claudia (Tierraventura) as well as local village guides who showed us the indigenous medicinal plants that are abundant in the area. The food was great at the local eateries (delicious trout, mushrooms that we picked on the walk), the hike tranquil and beautiful. Yves and Claudia were great guides and organisers. Apart from the logistics and the translations, they were provided interesting insights into the villages and were very good company! They also took really good care of us (providing rain jackets, coming back into town to return a phone we left behind in the van ...). We highly recommend both the trip and Tierraventura!

“A great time mountain hiking in Oaxaca with Tierraventura!”
Reviewed August 19, 2011

We just returned from 10 days in Oaxaca, Mexico and the highlight of the trip was easily a 2 day/1 night hike in the Sierra Norte. We booked the hike with Tierraventura and it was well worth it. The rainy season in southern Mexico starts in June and the flowers and greenery were wonderful. Tierraventura made it all easy - it is hard to imagine how the trip could have gone any better.

Our 1st day was in a little village called Llano Grande where the hillsides were covered with a reddish orange iris called the Butterfly Flower. There were thousands of them. The hike hit view points overlooking various mountains ranges and stopped at one sacred Zapotec site.

Our night was in a spacious adobe cabana with a fireplace, hot showers and a comfy bed. Tierraventura brought along extra sleeping bags for us which we used, it gets quite cold even in June at 10,000 feet. The meals in the village were delicious (e.g., chiles stuffed with cheese and corn and covered with cream and mango mousse for dessert).

The following day's hike was a hike that visitors don't get a chance to do often. We hiked with our Tierraventura guide and a guide from a village called San Miguel. The hike was greatt: a reservoir, ducks, hawks, pine forest, more panoramas, a kind of mountain palm tree and lots of flowers. We also climbed down into a steep rocky river canyon called Cueva de la Iglesia which seemed magical and was very different than the surrounding forest. Near the end we scaled a lookout that provided a 360 degree view of the forests and cliffs and then went to a different village for lunch.

Tierraventura's guide was with us the whole way He picked us up promptly at our hotel, translated the village guides' information, added a lot of interesting stuff about mountain culture, history, traditional medicine and was a good travel companion overall.
