Hostal Casa del Sol Oaxaca

Just returned home from 4 nights at Casa del Sol Oaxaca. We loved it. Guillermo, the owner, was wonderful. Please understand that this is a hostal. It is not a hotel. It is beautifully rustic. The central patio of this beautiful old colonial house in the center of Oaxaca is also the center of life at Casa del Sol. Long, sunny days in the patio. Cool nights. Very comfortable. The rooms are roomy, clean and simple. Mostly shared baths , kept very clean. The secret of Casa del Sol is that we felt that we were at home.
We hope to go back every year.
Thanks for everything Guillermo and continued success.

Place was clean, basic breakfast. Rooms were not very private specially the dormitory which is shared by both sexes. Plumbing needs some attention as shower appeared blocked and you were standing ankle deep in water. Value for money if you don't want to spend a lot.

Just to be clear, this is not a hotel but a hostel, with 5 bedrooms without private bathrooms and one dorm of about 10 beds. There is a very clean bathroom for women with 3 showers, and 2 showers for men. Most bedrooms don’t have a window. We chose the orange room that does have a window but had to pass through the dorm to get to it, and the street traffic noise was pretty loud. There is a gym opposite that plays loud music for an hour or so around 6pm. Breakfast was simple – toast, cereals, fruit, fruit juice, coffee, tea – and a large tub of margarine plonked on the table. The rooms are nicely decorated and the courtyard is very pretty. The people that work there are very nice. It’s a good deal at 350 pesos for a double room. We paid an extra 100 pesos to have the room during an extra day before taking the night bus.

My partner and I just spent five nights in the Casa del Sol, and it was really a great stay. It was probably the friendliest hotel I’ve ever visited. If you’re looking for room service and super thick towels, this is probably not the place for you. If you’re looking for a small, friendly place, where you’re made to feel welcome and comfortable, this is the place. There are only five rooms plus a small dorm room around a sunny courtyard. A light breakfast is served in the courtyard every morning, where you can meet other guests from around the world. You can also just relax in the courtyard to read or catch up on your email any time.

The hostel is east of the center of town, right behind the stunning Santo Domingo church. It’s convenient to town, (three blocks to a pedestrian street and about eight blocks to the town square) but on a quiet street.

I wasn’t sure I believed the positive reviews I read here before my stay. How can the best hotel in Oaxaca cost $35(US) a night? But I’m really glad I chose the Casa del Sol.

Room Tip: there are only five rooms plus a small dorm. You can't go wrong

Staff rendered service with a smile. Rooms, bathrooms and public areas are all tastefully done.
All areas are immaculately clean. There's free wifi and free continental breakfast is filling.

The well travelled manager/owner Guillermo went beyond the normal to give excellent service.
Isai, staff, always was quick to help with a smile.

I am encouraging friends and family to come to Oaxaca and stay at this understated, lovely lodging.
Guillermo arranged the trip to Hierve el Agua- a not to be missed destination.

My 14 yr old son and I stayed in a double bedroom (located off of the dorm room) at Casa del Sol for 4 nights in early July. Our room was spotless and we had a large window looking out onto the street. The hostel itself was incredibly clean, orderly, and well maintained. Guillermo, our host, spoke english well and was always available and eager to address any of our needs, both within the hostel and within the city. He arranged tours, drivers, and even our flight to Puerto Escondido. The hostel was located on a quiet street within an easy walking distance to the town center. It was very close to the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzman. All in all we were very happy with our stay and thought that Casa del Sol was a great value.
