“Best meal we've had so far in Oaxaca!”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

We've been here for almost 3 months now and this is by far the most authentic and delicious meal we've had in Oaxaca! We tried the tasting menu as everyone suggested and were extremely satisfied! We also sat in the beautiful garden in the back of the house which had a relaxing and romantic ambiance to it. The service was impeccable as the waiter was very friendly and knowledgable about the food and the timing was also perfect. We started the night off with some house Mezcal Reposado which was delicious and smooth. The tasting menu consisted of garnachas, taco de chile relleno, fried plantain with fresh cheese, tamales de carne, tamales de elote, slow cooked brisket and pork with 2 different delicious moles (mole coloradito and mole negro). Each item was very flavourful and very well prepared. The owner and the chef of the restaurant, Teca also came out after our meal to see how we liked it. She was extremely friendly and hospitable. Overall, an amazing dining experience!

“Very tasty”
Reviewed January 8, 2014 via mobile

It is a bit out of the way, but the food is authentic and tasty. Good prices. Not a fancy place, but it is worth a visit, The enchiladas de mole negro were very good, and some roasted bananas were also very good,

“Best meal in Oaxaca”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We spent a month in Oaxaca, ate high end and street food, and this was our favorite meal of the trip. The setting in the back garden was beautiful, the service was attentive and friendly, and the food was excellent. Four of us had the tasting menu, a pitcher of lemonade and about two thirds of the mescal on the table and it was about 300 pesos per person. Each course was better than the previous, the tamales were the lightest and tastiest I had on the entire trip, and the tacos of chili relleno were to die for. It's actually only about a 20 minute walk from parque llano, so it's not as far away as some reviews make it seem.

“Terrible rip-off leading to bad taste in my mouth”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Nine of us had new years eve dinner here. We called in advance to reserve and were told a price of 300 pesos/person including drinks. La Teca came highly recommended from someone back home and we were excited about going. The food was reasonably good, but nothing special, served in several courses, in very small portions. For onr course, we were served 4 tamales and were asked to share them around (9 people). Then it happened again when served a small dumpling.

Regarding drinks, there was a small bottle of mezcal on the table when we arrived. It poured 8 small glasses. The waiter immediately brought us 2 more bottles without asking. We said nothing of it and drank one more bottle as we understood drinks were included.

Service was poor as it was highly rushed. We asked twice for the waiter to slow down and he only did so when we were finished and offered dessert. We asked him to wait until we asked for the dessert. Dessert was highly sweetened spaghetti squash and lukewarm mint tea. Hugely disappointing! One would hope for something special on NYE.

When we asked for the bill, we were charged 350/person and for all drinks, including a jug of fruit juice and a few bottles of water. When we said something, it was immediately changed to 300/person and all drinks except 1 bottle of mezcal were now free.

In the end the price was 540/person with 4 bottles of wine that we did expect to pay for. The wine was nothing special and charged at 300/bottle. I've had much better wine in Mexican restaurants for less.

In the end, I was most disappointed and felt that we were taken advantage of. If you go, ask clear questions while reserving to have a better experience than we did. It sounds like it can happen!

“What I thought would be an insiders gem! wasn't .”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

I'll. start by saying I was really looking forward to this evening. We made reservations for New Year's Eve despite the owners reluctance at being open. but open they did. a bit of a challenge for the taxi drivers to find. Atmosphere was nice in the outdoor courtyard. I enjoyed the food but found some aspects of the dinner disappointing. We were served family style which meant having to share a tamale. kinda ridiculous. the desert was truly disappointing, sweetened spaghetti squash that was overly sweet and mint tea. the pricing of the meal was vague which resulted in a rather pricey la quenta. We were told around 300 pesos per persons which would include drinks. The only drink included was a small bottle of house mescal for 9 people. they charged for the pitcher of tamarind water and the mineral water. when the bill came the amount charged was 350 pesos. when I questioned the amount I was told it was New Years . I insisted I was quoted 300 so,they dropped the price. the food was delivered rapido and we were being rushed out of the restaurant to make way for the family 's dinner. I think they took advantage of the situation . An unpleasant ending to the evening .
