Description: Traditional food from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, all made when you order, all delicious. A garden area available when it's not too chilly or rainy. Wonderful art, and great service.

Mmm...having read some criticism on here for this excellent place, I wonder if people are not always getting the full experience. We arrived on a Sunday evening and felt we were in the wrong place. Yes, just four tables in what looked like a converted garage of a house. Then, we were taken into a beautiful garden through a separate entrance next door nod supplied with a meal to remember. The whole experience was like being invited into someone's home and given some delicious food and drink. The staff were extraordinarily good, too. This may not have been a five-star review had we been left inside but out back it was simply a delight and concluded an excellent day of el tule, a market, Mezcal tasting in matatlan and the fantastic drive to hierve el agua. La teca is well worth searching out but ask about the back.

After reading other reviews, we were surprised to find that the restaurant is four tables in a converted house in a suburban area with one small unisex bathroom. We were the only diners. After we asked a few questions about the menu, our waiter retreated to the kitchen. (We were a mixed group of Mexicans and Americans, all bi-lingual, with little experience with food from the Isthmus.) Then a woman came out from the kitchen and offered us a sampler's menu. We asked how much it would be. She said not to worry. So we tried the tamales, chiles and different menu items in a family-style format. The food was very good. Then, we got the check. $90 for four people when the average entree costs $7. We complained about the pricing and $25 was taken off the check. They said that they wanted us to be happy with the meal. We would have been much happier if we hadn't had to haggle over an inflated check. I truly wonder about the other grand reviews. Something strange is going on here....

Our group of six did the tasting menu, chef's choice. Started with excellent mescal, and the rest of the evening did not disappoint, from the spicy meat-topped garnachas) to the three types of tamales, to the wonderful chile relleno, fried plantains, baked mashed potatoes, pork with mole, beef estofado...to die for...this was a real treat. The waiter was friendly and accommodating, and the chef came out a couple of times to chat and answer our questions. The space was fun--our table was at the front of the small room that is open to the street, so the ambience was very local. The price was reasonable. We will return soon. Taxi from the center was 40 pesos

Nice ambience. Five of us went to eat dinner there. Two of us were served their entrees 40 minutes before the third one was, and then it took another ten minutes for the remaining two members of our party to receive their dinners! (The last three had orderred the same meals!)
Three deserts were ordered. One arrived after twenty minutes and the other two never did get tthere so when we requested the bill, we had to cancel them! Waiter was nowhere to be seen during the prolonged waiting times! Food, when served was of decent quality. The mezcal served was of excellent quality! As far as going out with friends for a nice dinner, this was a total waste of time!

The best home-cooked Mexican food you will ever have. It is worth the effort to get there (just take a taxi).
