“wonderful gem in Oaxaca”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

My sister and I stumbled upon a review of this place and decided to give it a try. A short cab ride from the city we were dubious at first due to the suburban location. We ordered a tasting menu and let the chef decide what to serve us. It was one of the best meals I have eaten and I would have given the restaurant 5 stars had it not taken so long to get the check. (We waited 30-40 minutes after we asked for check). very friendly staff with limited english. Excellent food in a quaint space. DON'T miss it, if in Oaxaca!

“Great Oaxaca Restaurant with Unique Mexican Food”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

La Teca is a quaint, suburban Istmeño restaurant in Col Reforma, serving Oaxaca food with a unique touch in a pleasant environment. Staff and owners are warm, informative and obliging. Prices are within the appropriate range for what you get. I had been told for years that the food was the best of its kind in the city, but expensive. The former is accurate, since I've been to at least three Istmeño restaurants in the city, but the latter is not so; the cost for a full dinner for four, with soft drinks, three alcoholic beverages, and tip was about 1350 pesos. Highly recommended. The tasting menu provides a good smattering of all that is from Tehuantepec, so at least consider it. It gives credence to the MYTH of the seven moles.

“Absolutely, One of the Best Restaurants in Oaxaca”
Reviewed June 30, 2012

Thanks to the Mexico cooks! blog, we found Sra. Deyanira Aquio's wonderful restaurant La Teca. Located in Colonia Reforma, way off the beaten tourist path, this restaurant specializes in regional dishes from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This evening we were the only diners at the tiny restaurant and we were treated as genuine guests in Sra. Aquino's home. Seated on her outside patio, we had a dining experience of a lifetime. Without even looking at a menu, we left our dining adventure in her hands. The botanas that began the meal were a meal in themselves. We started with a platter of garnaches (fried discs of corn dough topped with a mixture of meats, vegetables and salsa). This was followed by molotes de platano macho (small, sweetly ripe plantains topped with crema de mesa and queso fresco. Absolutely delicious! We rounded out the botanas with three types of tamales typical of the Tehuantepec region including the tastiest fresh corn tamale anyone has ever been offered. One of the other tamales was her tamalito de Cambray, a corn tamale filled with chicken, raisins, olives and almonds. For our main courses, we were brought two other regional dishes. The estofado de bodas is a slow cooked beef combined with fruits, chilis, and other spices. Outrageously good! Our second main dish was the asado de puerto con mole (both negro and rojo). The roasted pork literally fell the bone. The moles were the best that I've tasted in Oaxaca. The side dish served along with the meat platters was her purée de papas estilo Istmeno (coursely mashed potatoes with vegetables that were then baked). We topped dinner off with two types of marinated fruit. Including two rounds of beer for everyone, the four of us ate for less than $20 US per person. Dinner concluded with photos taken with Sra. Aquino while waiting for the taxi they graciously called for us. There is a great deal of wonderful food in Oaxaca. However, I don't think you'll find any better than that offer at La Teca.

“Great service, hospitality and food.”
Reviewed January 9, 2012

We were the sole guests on Christmas eve, after checking earlier with the owner to see if they were open. Our family was escorted through their house to a lovely private patio where a table for four was set. We were treated like family and served the same food that they were all eating for their Navidad celebration. It was also the owners birthday.
We had eleven courses, some had taken up to three days to make. Everything was unusual and magnificent. The owner and her family were all gracious and we have a memory to last a life time.
My suggestion is throw away the menu and ask the owner to let you sample whatever she thinks is best. It will be delicious.

“Good food, friendly service, new favourite place in Oaxaca city.”
Reviewed February 4, 2011

Offering traditional foods of the south coast of Oaxaca state (Isthmus of Tehuantepec). Although we have visited Oaxaca for twenty years this was our first time at the small, family run restaurant. The owner welcomed us (she is a former school administrator turned chef), the server suggested since it was our first visit we should try a sample of "everything". And that is what we and two friends happily did. It was all good, well seasoned and well prepared, served with information on both ingredients and preparation. The walls are hung with a collection of paintings and drawings from regional artists. After dinner (and a shot of excellent mescal) we were shown the small garden at the back which is open when weather permits.
