“Do not miss if English is your first or second language”

More books than you'd ever expect; many roomsful, in fact, mostly donated by vacationers, so it's heavy on fiction, big classics, history and long discursive texts. Oaxaca residents, especially retirees, rely on this place. Tables for reading local newspapers and getting into conversations are near front door. Twice while we were there we were "picked up" by Oaxacans who wanted to practice their English, which resulted in very friendly, interesting and valuable (to us) conversations. There is a schedule of events posted on the website of the library.

“Far more than a library--it's the go-to for info on Oaxaca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

First, the children's lending libraries project now supports over 60 libraries in mostly small, remote villages throughout the State of Oaxaca. (www.librosparapueblos.com) They're now completing their first vision testing of the children and their families, and distributing eye glasses to those that need them. The library offers tours to their chilren's library that can take you into villages you'll never see on the tourist trail. (For instance Nov 2, 2012, there's a day of the dead tour to a small weaving village, hosted by a weaver devoted to natural dyes, with lunch in weaver's home, and visit to a small museum.)

Second, if you have a question, like I did yesterday concerning where to buy/find/or make Greek yogurt, someone there will have the answer. To say nothing if you need a good cooking school, language school, or tip on markets, values, or daily life in Oaxaca. Best time to catch a gathering of knowledgeable residents is around 11am, usually gathered around the round table, sipping coffee.

“Very helpful for visitors!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2012

The lending library is a great place to go to find books in both English and Spanish, and to get advice about your visit! There is internet access and they have computers that you can use at no cost. They have a whole notebook with apartments and houses for rent for long-term stays and there is a billboard with advertisements for jobs and events. The library also hosts a number of activities and often has speakers come and discuss visits to oaxaca and activities you can get involved in. They also run the website www.oaxacacalendar.com, which is a great resource for upcoming events in the city.
