“delightful patio and pleasant service”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

A peaceful respite in the afternoon, we enjoyed several delicious meals here. The best tables are further back in the covered patio area - usually the second or third they will show you.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

We planned a trip to Marco Polo after reading the positive reviews. Unfortunately, my meal was very disappointing. Calamares Rellenos Marco Polo (stuffed squid with cream cheese) sounded good as described by the waiter. I love clamares in all methods of preparation. But this turned out to be a tasteless over fried bland offering. The salad and steamed vegetables were combined, which was interesting and well presented. Fortunately for my wife, her shrimp stuffed avocado was very good and a large portion. Portrayed as an appetizer, this is a meal.

The atmosphere is nice albeit the tables are packed into the court yard. Ask the hostess for seating in the back away from the main walkway. Wait staff run back and forth constantly between the bar and kitchen along the walkway tables.

I’d rate this establishment “average”. However, because of the great waiter, a free dessert, and a very good shrimp avocado appetizer, I’ll say, “good”. Just try something different then the Calamares Rellenos.

“Something Different in Oaxaca”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

I think this is my favorite restaurant in Oaxaca - and there are lots to choose from! When it's time for a break from mole, tlayudas, chiles, tortillas, etc. this is the place to go. Fresh fish or seafood served any way you want it, grilled, baked, mojo de ajo (in wonderful garlic sauce). The restaurant is located on the south side of Llano Park. It is set in a garden with lush vegetation all around. They have a clay oven in which they cook their fish. When we were there (a Sunday afternoon) the clientele was made up of mostly Oaxaqueno families. A good value for reasonable prices. One note: the restaurant closes at 6 p.m.

“Marco Polo Hits the Mark”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

When we can't stand any more Oaxacan-cheesey-things, we always go to Marco Polo for the fresh seafood. Their leafy and shaded patio space is always a welcome reprieve in the heat of the afternoon sun. I always gets the grilled shrimp and top it up with the fresh lime provided. It is a more expensive place than most, but it is always a treat with great service.

“Really excellent fish and seafood”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

We eat frequently at the Marco Polo, enjoying the 100 peso fish filet (red snapper) that is prepared in a variety of ways. My favorite (Meuniere) comes on a large platter with vegetables, rice, and a small salad. We've only had the baked whole fish one time, and it was very tasty. The spicier preparations lack vegetables. Shrimp cocktails and marisco cocktails are very good. The portions are quite large.

The setting is in a shady garden area, although there is a less-inviting over flow area to the left. It's fun to watch fish going into the wood-fired oven off to the side. The restaurant always is busy, so the advice to get there early for a weekend breakfast is accurate. This advice applies to weekday lunch hours, as well.

As noted in another, less positive review, the staff doesn't speak English (we're in Mexico, no?) but menus are offered in Spanish and English versions. We've found the staff to be attentive and pleasant.

Addressing another review, pan dulce at breakfast in many Mexican restaurants is an add on. Yes, I find it annoying, especially the first few times I experienced the practice in other restaurants. Get your pan dulce in a bakery. Some restaurants that cater more to Americans/Canadians offer bolillos as part of the breakfast. Los Cuiles even provides butter if requested! However, this is less usual in traditional restaurants.
