This was a favorite lunch place for us...wish it was open for dinner too! On my first visit I asked the server (older man - owner?) what he suggested and his recommendations, a tetela espirituosa and mixta "de ese" were delicious. Try something with the ubiquitous hierba santa, which is a large herbal leaf that has a minty-oregano type flavor. Memelitas were simple and amazing; we craved them the rest of the trip. Items are cheap and you sized so can order 2 or 3 different things to try. Take a taxi for 40 pesos from the zócalo, it is well worth it! A must try while in Oaxaca.

After reading about Itanoni online we were very excited to try this restaurant. The food definitely did not disappoint. With such an inexpensive menu, we were able to order various dishes a la carte. Of the quesadilla, tamale, tetela, memelita and tostada we sampled, we thought the tetela and tamale were standouts and would have loved to order more.

On the other hand, while service started out fine enough, we were soon left frustrated. Though they passed us frequently, servers and runners ignored us for about 35 minutes after we were done eating, and we were never able to ask for more food. It took three attempts and an additional 20 minutes to actually get the check (two attempts with the same person).

All in all, we care more about food than anything else, so while we can still say we loved our lunch, the service was so bad that we would find it very hard to return.

The outdoor ambiance was nice. Hot beverages ( I had chocolate in a bowl) were served promptly. The tamales had a fresh corn taste.

Itanoni is a unique spot, as described in the other reviews here. The focus on highlighting diverse, indigenous strains of corn is not only historically interesting, but results in delicious and unique dishes.

I live in Oaxaca and go to Itanoni at least a couple times a month and, lately, it has become the go-to gathering spot for breakfast. There are six breakfast "paquetes," and they feature a main dish as well as fresh-squeezed juice and a hot beverage (coffee, atole, or my favorite, champurrado). I always order the Veracruzano, a super-thin omelet stuffed with black beach paste and served with farmer's cheese and Chiapas cream. On the side--two tortillas, often made of a thick, grainy corn that I love and a chunky green salsa for just the right bite. The whole paquete is 45 pesos, or under $4. Provecho!

A casual place, attracting locals and tourists, with a great back patio and plenty of opportunity to watch tortillas being made on an enormous comal, plus other menu items.
The breakfast options are good value, including juice and coffee. The coffee and chocolate are served in pottery bowls, with the chocolate whipped to a high froth, as it should be. The service is very good, and everything is cooked to order. If you have only one opportunity to try authentic, local food in Oaxaca, this should be it.
