“Gotta see this”

Take the time to see Tomb7 artifacts. Then go to Monte Alban. It will make more sense to you after visiting the museum.

“Beautiful church”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

It's an amazing site, right in Downtown, worth stopping by. Traditional Oaxacan weddings are often held there, if you are there on Friday or Saturday, you will oust likely witness one

Items are rare and beautifully displayed. A great place to visit especially with additional trips to Monte Alban.

“We loved the guide Michelangelo”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

The temple is of course gorgeous, though it's pretty weird seeing bas reliefs of Hernan Cortes and other conquistidors as part of the tree that starts with St Dominic on the ceiling of the atrium. These are after all the people who murdered vast numbers of Mexicans who now come to worship here. Were I running Santa Domingo I'd have some kind of plaque reflecting on the irony, but not much I can do about it.

I do want to totally rave about the guide Michalangelo. Another reviewer said he didn't mention to the end that expected a tip, which is wrong, but maybe because he learned from this experience he was totally upfront with us, said he'd love to explain the church and we could pay him whatever we wanted. We ended up talking for an hour, about the church, but also about Mexican history, Pope Francis, St Francis of Assisi vs Saint Dominic, and everything else related. Michelangelo speaks great English and has studied theology extensively, including a couple years in seminary before he decided he didn't want to be a priest. So if you want a window into this church, but also current Catholicism (he mirrors my sentiments in really admiring Pope Francis but being much more critical of his predecessor), the role of the church in Mexico and of faith in the faith community, I can't imagine an hour better spent. We even ended up with an invite to a party of some friends of his, but ended up crossing connections. I'd say the conversation has been a highlight of our trip to Oaxaca, although the Botanical Garden and En Via tour are right up there too, as is the food at Biznega.
