This was definitely an average church to visit. Worth a quick stop if you're in the area, or just wanted to visit this area of Oaxaca City. We did especially like, though, the angels holding the chandeliers throughout the church. We hadn't seen that before.

Of Oaxaca's major churches, this is clearly the local favorite. There were more people praying here than in all the other churches we visited combined.

The outside is very lovely - it really does resemble the Treasury in Petra from a distance, as other reviewers have noted. And inside, the Virgin of Solitude herself, unmissable above the altar, is a real showstopper with her stern but serene expression; her stiff, pyramid-shaped blue gown; and her 5-pound golden crown encrusted with 600 diamonds.

This Basilica in Oaxaca caught our eye, even more than the Cathedral. It is quite beautiful and the facade appears very similar to the Treasury in Petra from a distance.

This is clearly a favorite of the locals; at mid-day there were more people inside than at the many other churches nearby. I myself received a blessing while there, an email confirming a new job!

Between Soledad and another church sits the Plaza de la Danza where many events are held. Make sure you try to find out what is happening up there and get there early to get a seat.
