“An English speaking guide is worth the price”

Ask for Gabe! We picked him from the green tourist dome in the center of the zocalo. We climbed Mt Alban to the top for a dramatic view! It's a history buffs paradise!

“Great ruins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

These are a must see for Oaxaca; situated on top of the hill with a view towards other sites. The buildings are as decorated at Mitla but the sheer size is worth the visit. There is a good museum and nice cafe with a view. You can get a bus from Mina street (500 block) on the 1/2 hr during the week.

“Skip- able ruins”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014

You can skip these ruins in good conscience if you are in town for another reason, like Mezkal tasting or you have visited some of the other lovely ruins Mexico has to offer. I personally found the Mitla pyramids, though way smaller a better alternative as they offer something different from the other ruins I have visited, architecture wise and as far as the scenery goes. Ruins among cactus plants has something peculiar and funny about it.

“a thrill!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2014

we Loved this site. Our 79 year old zapotec guide was intense and wonderful. Who knew a schoool of medicine exsted so long ago? Our 2 or 2 1/2 hours was just perfect. The museum afterwards isn't much, compated to the actual ruins, which are thrilling with a guide.

“Awesume is a word that should be reserved for places”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2014

like this!
Took the "Tourist" bus from the Mina Street location for 50 pesos round trip. Bus was comfortable & seemed in excellent condition. Tourist bus is a bit of a misnomer as many locals use it. The ride up the narrow winding road that is in good condition took about 20 minutes.
The site (59 pesos) is spectacular. I explored it's many buildings,, platforms, courtyards etc for 2 1/2 hours. Guides are available but signage is available in English so not absolutely necessary. In addition a guide book offered in several languages is available in the gift shop for 84 pesos.
Having visited Teotihuacan in the past & Machu Picchu this past year I find Monte Alban as interesting & fascinating as those sites.
A most wondrous day!
