Impressive Zapotec cultural center, located on a very strategic high plateau with a magnificent view of the Oaxaca valley.
We benefited by having an outstanding and well educated, English speaking guide (Antonio).

I have visited pre Hispanic ruins throughout Mexico, but Monte Alban is truly special. It sits atop a mountain, high above Oaxaca. The panoramic vistas of the city and farmlands below are breathtaking. Monte Alban is well preserved and well maintained. You can loose yourself in time as you wander about the ruins... Unlike other well known archaeological sites, on the day we went, Monte Alban was not bustling with tour groups; it was peaceful and quite. The only people we ran into as we climbed to the upper plateau, were a few locals selling souvenirs. They were so respectful and low key, we actually enjoyed buying their wares. They were much less expensive than in city. Monte Alban is a must for people visiting Oaxaca. Actually, it's a must for anyone traveling to Mexico! A tip: try to time your visit around sunset for the solitude and magnificent golden hour photos. Also, don't miss having a drink in the café. The views are gorgeous.

Our visit to Monte Alban was one of the highlights of our trip last winter to the Oaxaca region of Mexico. This ancient site is well preserved and well cared for. It is an amazing indication of the level of culture that marked the Zapotec people of the region 2500 years ago.
Built on the top of a mountain on the edge of the city of Oaxaca it consists of a series of pyramids and other building used for religious and other purposes. Two and half millenia ago, the mountain top was leveled of to provide a huge gathering place for the Zapotec of the area. The site is a cultural centre for the people who live in the area now, It expresses the richness of the cultural base and the early history of the region.
As a North American tourist visiting the area, I could not help but be impressed by this site and the cultural richness of the regions and Monte Alban certainly expresses. We had one day on the site but would very much like to go back and spend more time there meandering in this wonderful site.

Monte Alban is first of all a place with gorgeous views of the valleys that come together at Oaxaca City, not to mention the clouds and the mountain landscapes. The beautiful architectural remains are of what might be the oldest city in all of the Americas. However, somehow it doesn't get the publicity of the Maya sites and Tenochtitlan. Go early in the a.m., wear a hat and take bottled water.Expect to enjoy learn and be emotionally moved.
