As a daughter of Mexican immigrants the concept of "home" can be elusive. To walk on the sacred and ancient ground of Monte Alban, I felt both my heart stir and my soul sense peace as my tour guide shared with me a deep knowing of my ancestors and their brilliant contributions.

Monte Alban is very close to central Oaxaca. There are various tour companies that go. I opted for a private all day tour that included Monte Alban, Arbol de Tule, Valle de Teotitlan to visit Zapotec weaving cooperatives, and a stop for lunch. This option runs between 200-300 pesos/hour in a very nice a/c van with a very lovely and knowledgeable young man who is also a chef and teaches cooking classes http://oaxacancuisine.com/.

We had a terrific Guide who brought it all to life. It was a fascinating and educational experience...not to mention the visual of the architecture and art. It's very close to town, as well.

Monte Alban was a very pleasant day trip out of Oaxaca city. The are various ways to get to the site (walking from the center is NOT one of them). If taking a taxi (quickest and easiest) have the driver pick you up at a specified time as there are not always taxi's waiting for the return trip. Allow 3 hours to really enjoy the site at a reasonable pace. Bring a hat and water as it is usually hot and dry with limited options for finding shade.

The archeological excavation of the Zapotec ruins of Monte Alban is one of the two reasons that Oaxaca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site...
