Owner description: The ruins of this ancient Zapotec capital make up one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Latin America.

The site is awesome. I cannot find words to describe the feelings. Take plenty of water, a few snacks - and spend 3-4 hours at least. There are trees that provide shadow, so you are not exhausted by sun. And just feed the atmosphere, the magnetism.

So instead of taking a tour my friend and I decided we'd take a local bus to the town just outside then walk up. The walk takes about an hour so take some water with you, though if you decide to do it this way there are street vendors right next to where the bus ends so can get some there.

So after the walk we made it to the entrance. 50 pesos entry if I remember correctly. First had a quick browse in the little museum which has a bit of info on the place, its history and the people who lived there.

Went in to the main part after and wow I didn't realise just how big the place was going to be. The ruins are in perfect condition and it really is a beautiful place. Great opportunitys for panoramas of Oaxaca and the surrounding areas in the valley. Spent a good few hours walking around and admiring the incredible structures. Afterwards finished with a beer in the cafe with a great view of Oaxaca. Would come back here in an instant. It is so peaceful and a great tribute to the pre-Hispanic communities of the area. Must see if in Oaxaca!

We hired a very knowledgeable personal guide. . A native and archaeological scholar named Vicente who presented a one and a half hour tour.
We paid him either 200 or 300 pesos for his time but it was money well spent. Without his insight one might just consider the place a pile of rocks. Instead you leave with a grasp of the ancient culture.

This is the site of the ruins of the Zapotecas. Make sure you get a guide to get the most out of your activity.

Definitely make sure you have a tour guide, to explain what you are looking at. The history is very interesting and grizzly.
