It is hard to describe the impact of standing on one of thousands of stone steps that were carefully placed on site 2500 years ago. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the sounds of the people who lived, worked and played in this magnificent and sophisticated place.
We hired a guide, Mario, who took us around much of Monte Alban and carefully explained the customs, knowledge and beliefs of the three people's who lived here between 500 BC and 750 AD. We felt privileged to spend four hours learning and walking around this treasure.

We visited Monte Alban a few days ago and were really surprised with its history. Important to have a Oaxacan guide who really knows this site, otherwise you will miss out on a lot of its importance. Will go back again after more reading and again with a guide as there is a new area that has just been opened up and you would miss it otherwise.

No trip to charming Oaxaca is complete without a trip to these ruins. Set high on a mesa, these ruins are unforgettable. From one of the most complete refurbished ball courts to lovely pyramids. Check out the sculptures of the deformed, sick, or magical figures in the main court yard. There are no other examples of this type of sculpture in all of Mexico.

When visiting Monte Alban definitely take a guided tour before strolling around the pyramids. It is a breathtaking site which dates back to 500 BC. The history is fascinating and climbing the pyramid is worth the breathtaking views. The small museum is worth exploring. This was a highlight of our vacation!
