I stayed at the Hotel Aurora for two separate nights. When I arrived in the first night, I found out that although I had booked rooms over the phone and received an email with a confirmation number, my booking was nowhere to be found. We were able to find rooms for all of us in the end, but the staff at the time was not friendly or even apologetic for the mistake. Putting that aside, the rooms are large and clean. In the first night I got a room in the back and it was quiet. Unfortunately, in the second night, the only room available was facing the street and I wasn't able to sleep at all because of the street noise. Although the water has good pressure, I waited for more than 10minutes for the water to warm, and all I got was slightly less-than-cold-water.
In the last night, the staff also forgot to call our cab early morning for the airport. The only good thing is that the town really doesn't stop and there were plenty of cabs going around the streets.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the streets because of the noise.

Passed through Oaxaca twice recently about ten days apart, and stayed at the Hotel Aurora at a friend's insistence. Excellent advice and I'll gladly pass it along to anyone else.

Hotel Aurora is definitely not to be confused with some all-inclusive resort, and the price of 400 pesos per night reflects that difference. On both nights the room was clean and neat, the pitcher of drinking water was ready, the shower water was hot, and there was nicely wrapped soap by the sink. The television may have worked -- I don't know or care. The room was comfortably quiet even in the environment of a teacher's strike that had the streets filled with strikers "camping out".

Good restaurants and small shops are a short walk away. What more can an un-pampered tourist ask for?

I have stayed at many places in Oaxaca over the years and Hotel Aurora is one of my favorites. It's a family run hotel two blocks south of the zocolo. Rooms are immaculate and quiet. Television with cable are in the rooms. I paid 350 pesos (about $25 US dollars) for a single; doubles are 400 pesos. There is room for about seven cars at the entrance. Just a very quiet, convenient, safe, and reasonably priced hotel.
