“Lower your expectations, Casa de la Abuela is a definite miss.”
Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I went for a late lunch, early dinner. With fairly good reviews we thought we'd stop in. We should have just kept going. The food took a while to get out, about 45 minutes or so. Sadly, I must have been waiting to be brought from kitchen to table for just that long. At best, the food was lukewarm, at worst, flat out COLD! The chile relleno was soaking in oil, and it tasted old. Beans were salty. I can go on, but I think the picture is pretty much drawn. To be fair, the Caldo de Elote was very good -- excellent, simple flavors. The wait staff tried their best, but really things are a little beyond their control. As we exited, a did address my concerns, letting staff know that it was not cool to serve cold food. The waiter was genuinely embarrassed, and I reminded him that it was not his fault.

My Abuela would have never allowed cold, overly salt, underwhelming food leave her kitchen...this one should not either.

“Overrated tourist trap”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

I wish there was a ranking between "poor" and "average". Casa de La Abuela offers a typical assortment of Oaxacan cuisine. Unfortunately the quality of the food did not match the high prices. Also, the service was spotty. The wait staff was attentive but my wife's entree came out about 10 minutes before mine. Almost all of our items were either room temperature or even cold. The most interesting dish was a relleno stuffed with a savory and slightly sweet picadillo. It had great flavor but was served almost cold and a little too greasy. The caldo de elote was also very nice. If you walk 4-5 blocks in any direction from Casa De La Abuela, you will find Oaxacan food just as delicous or better and at almost half the price. The view of the zocalo was very nice.

“Tourist Restaurant”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

The service is good and the location excellent with window seat looking onto the Zocalo and park, but the food is average. Our guide book really talked up the restaurant but we found it quite average. Prices are reasonable.

“Great Zocalo view”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

The restaurant is located on the second floor overlooking the NW corner of the Zocalo. It is a premier place to eat and relax watching time pass by. On Wednesday nights you may see hundreds of keen ballroom dancers performing in the square below to live music.

We selected a light meal after a full comida earlier in the afternoon. The generous portions of quesadillas (mole and cheese) and enchiladas (chicken) dishes were excellent and at 55 pesos each a real bargain given the premier location. Select a table in the window if you can. Service in English was excellent.

“Great food and view”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

We had lunch just when the restaurant opened. It filled quickly, so timing arrival for lunch exactly at 1 PM assures a table at the windows overlooking the square. The menu is extensive and features well-prepared local foods. The black mole was superb. The shredded beet and spinach salad was also good. A cook prepares large tortillas and makes tlayudas in the dining room. Overall, a good value and great atmosphere with excellent food - apparently quite popular with the Oaxaquenos.
