“short fat tree”

El Tule is supposed to have a record breaking circumference. It is definitely an old, short, fat cypress. This present desert area was apparently a swamp a few thousand years ago. The tree and church are fenced in. There is a charge to enter - supposedly to pay for the watering of the tree.

Yes, the tree is very impressive ...but unless you have other business in town, Look at a picture on Google images ....no need to waste valuable time

While it is impossible to judge a restaurant by one dish, based on their posole rojo, I would not eat at this restaurant again. Posole happens to be one of my favorites and I feel I am a good judge of it's quality. At El Tule it was very ordinary and served as I've never seen it before - that is, without shredded cabbage, chopped onions, radishes, and cilantro. They instead served it with only shredded lettuce and adding all those extras is half the enjoyment. The flavor, the pork, and the hominy were all fine but it simply lacked pizazz!!

Neat small town not far from Oaxaca. Had the greenest park areas we have seen in Mexico. The Tule Tree is fabulous. Hope it lasts another 2000 years!

Great seafood restaurant right near the arches - on your left as you face the arch and the giant tree. Fireworks on the festival of candelaria are awesome...
