Casa Merlos is an almost 30 year old family owned restaurant with a menu of famous original-ancient recipes from the city of Puebla (Mexico). It is not a fancy restaurant in a fancy neighborhood but it is undoubtedly the very best restaurant of Puebla`s kitchen in Mexico City. And this is not only based on my own opinion as well of thousands more but supported on numerous national and international awards you can see hanging on the walls, won year after year. As I said, location is not the best but the trip there is worthwhile and of course, it is not an expensive restaurant. The building is an old house, not very big and simply decorated although every piece of tableware is an artcraft from the typical white-blue ceramic from Puebla. Cleanliness is perfect as well as service.Menu has entrees where " chalupitas" ( small tortillas lard-fried with green/red salsa, tiny pieces of chicken and chopped onion) are the best I`ve ever had and of course you`ll find soups too( try the tortilla soup) . Nevertheless, reputation comes from the main courses -all specialties- among which the most famous are: chiles mecos, mole poblano and pepian verde. Desserts are OK but don`t leave any space for them, delight yourself with the rest. Ambiance is of people going to have a great meal and leave, mostly families ( no drinking pre-meal ritual). Merlos offers too several " cooking festivals" throughout the year such as the "week of 16th century Puebla`s recipes" and the very famous ( among those of us who know the place and are loyal forever-clients) "Chiles en Nogada" season ( from May to September). Restaurant is open only from 13:00 to 18:00 hrs from Thursday to Sunday taking reservations only for Thursdays and Fridays. So, if you want to go there on the weekend, arrive before 15:00 hrs or you will surely have to wait for at least 30 minutes.
