This historic restaurant in the center of Mexico City is well worth a visit. Unlike the Sanborns scattered everywhere in Mexico, it is a fully funtioning restaurant with a wonderful old-timey atmosphere. When I first spent time in Mexico 40 years ago, it was my favorite place to hang-out. Although the food quality varies, the experience and general ambiance are not to be missed.

The service is slow and in my opinion the staff stretched a bit thin. Prices are very reasonable and often there is a line to get a table, especially at night.

This restaurant is situated in the Casa de los Azulejos or "House of Tiles", an 18th century palace in Mexico City. The name comes from the fact that three of its facades are covered in expensive blue and white tiles from the Puebla state. It belongs to the Sanborn Hermanos sa which, in turn, belongs to Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world (Forbes). (He has a web site that is worth seing. Also see the Wiki site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Slim)
The restaurant is luxurious but not overly expensive. The bill, for 4 at night was 678.00 pesos including taxes and service which comes to approximately 68.00$ cdn. There is also a store on the upper floor and murals, fountains and paintings. This is an enjoyable visit.

Sanborns is an institution in Mexico City, there are many on every corner, but this one is on Madero the pedestrian street and in an old Blue tiled Hacienda type building. The ambience is fantastic, there used to be such parties there, make sure you wander through all of the rooms as each is very different. We went for breakfast every day during our visit as it was delicious and great value.

What a disgraceful excuse for a restaurant in a city that is full of WONDERFUL dining opportunities. It is remarkable that such a low quality restaurant is located in such a beautiful building.

My father got food poisoning from his chicken tacos, and I was so disgusted by my very fatty pork tacos that I barely touched my plate and lost my appetite.

Sanborn's is a chain in Mexico of a level well below Denny's. I am from California where I often enjoy Mexican food, and Sanborn's is the WORST Mexican food I have ever had. The food is bland, of poor quality with meat that is way too fatty, and as mentioned above, my father GOT SICK! The bathroom is also filthy. And service was horrible.
The restaurant is crowded as a tourist trap given its location in the beautiful Casa de los Azulejos (House of the Blue Tiles). Other than that, you have thousands of better options for dining in Mexico City. So maybe drop by just to view the interior or get a drink at the bar on the top floor, and then, by all means, eat somewhere else, such as El Cardenal where they take pride in their food and it is very clean.
Do not spend your hard earned money at this horrible establishment. Is it worth risking a high chance of food poisoning just because the building is beautiful?
