“Is one of my favorites restaurants in Mexico City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014

El Cardenal is located in 215 Paseo de la Palmas Avenue at the corner of Monte Camerun street, Lomas de Chapultepec.
When you arrived by car, the valet parking is waiting for you, is better if you do your reservation before (you can do it, via telephone) because sometimes it is busy, and you have to wait, but do not worry they offer a nice coffee while you re waiting for your table.
The decor is nice, big crystal-windows and nice natural light.
The menu is mexican food, the traditional breakfast is the best: you must to ask for Chocolate "Doña Oliva" and the freshly baked bread made by the cook. And try the thick nata (film) made from fresh pasteurized milk. I can also recommend:
Escamoles omelette (ant eggs, a prehispanic delicacy)
Aporreado with eggs (dry beef with eggs)
Hidalguense gorditas (stuffed corn paddies)
The staff is friendly and the price is good too.
Enjoy¡¡¡

“Excellent Food, excellent service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

Having read the many great reviews of this restaurant (as well as the couple of grumpy ones), we were very much looking forward to eating there. A block or so off the Zocolo, it couldn't be more convenient when you are down in that area. Given its popularity and prominence, I thought it might be unwelcoming of nicely dressed, but still obvious, American tourists. Quite the contrary. We went twice – once for lunch and once for breakfast. The service was excellent and the staff welcoming. The food was different, interesting and really delicious. Another review has mentioned the octopus – amazing! The prices are reasonable considering the quality of the food and service. Highly recommend!

“High Level Mexican Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

Real Mexican food, with first class ingredients. Tradicional food before the fast food. Hand made dishes, as grandmother kitchen. It's a clasic. Good level.

“Fair for what they charge for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

I was at El Cardenal on February the 3rd, 2014, and after seeing all the outstandings reviews of the restaurant I tried it.

My first impression was that the restaurant looked much more as a traditional Mexican Cantina. After waiting for a table for around 15min, my first impressions were right: I arrived at 13:15 at the restaurant and none of the waiters speaks English, so they gave me the Breakfast Menu. I ordered a Coke Zero and they bring me a regular one. The food is traditionally from Mexico, but it's definitely not the place you're going to have a good environment and good appetizers. The food was good (nothing special) and I'm sorry to disappoint El Cardenal fans, but giving it 3 stars is much more than it really deserves.
PS.: The lunch menu has around 8 options.

“Barbacoa and traditional breakfast with kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

We loved the barbacoa at this restaurant, we also tried several fruit juices and traditional NATAS with bread. The service was spectacular and my four year old loved it!
