We have lived in Mexico City for almost a year and nobody ever told us about this new way of seeing Teotihuacan! Came across Volare right here on TripAdvisor and based on the positive reviews decided to book a flight. Our friend was visiting us from Africa and had never been on a balloon before; both hubby and I experienced a flight many years ago in Germany.
We booked directly with Volare and with my very broken Spanish and their reasonable English we managed to make a plan to be picked up in Mexico City before sunrise. Note that the shuttle to the "globopuerto" only collects clients from hotels not residences. The bus is not very comfortable and we had to ask for air-conditioning before almost suffocating due to lack of air! Still, it's a quick 1 hour drive with little traffic, so we survived :o)
There were many balloons being made ready as we arrived; it was freezing cold this fine morning in June. The hot coffee and cookies served in the hangar were a welcome treat! We had booked a private basket for the 3 of us and with the pilot we made a cozy group. My friend was very alarmed at how tiny the basket looked but once we were in it and lifted off she completely forgot about it! We flew low at first, so close to homes that dogs were barking up at us and people waved as they went about their business. We went higher and higher as we circled Teotihuacan and the view over the site was just incredible. We could see for miles across wonderful country side (and more ruins scattered around the area beyond the complex), mountains and even spotted El Popo (Popocatépetl Volcano) it was such a clear day. We were very lucky with the weather as the rainy season usually starts in June; the flight was smooth and trouble free. Our pilot spoke excellent English and we felt very safe in his capable hands. We then landed (very softly) in a field somewhere and were met by the pick-up in charge of the balloon. While the crew were busy packing up the balloon we enjoyed a glass of (extremely sweet) bubbly wine and snacks provided by Volare. We returned to the hangar for some celebrating with the crew and other clients; there is a lovely garden at the site complete with outdoor furnishings and a couple of peacocks! After we arranged for the bus (for an extra fee) to take us to Teotihuacan so we could walk around the pyramids for a bit. A couple of hours later we were picked up and taken back to Mexico City.
All in all this is a very worth while trip and all the staff at Volare were very helpful and friendly. My husband forgot his precious bush hat in the shuttle but Volare did not disappoint; the hat was returned a few days later!
