“Oh what a thrill!!!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

We have lived in Mexico City for almost a year and nobody ever told us about this new way of seeing Teotihuacan! Came across Volare right here on TripAdvisor and based on the positive reviews decided to book a flight. Our friend was visiting us from Africa and had never been on a balloon before; both hubby and I experienced a flight many years ago in Germany.

We booked directly with Volare and with my very broken Spanish and their reasonable English we managed to make a plan to be picked up in Mexico City before sunrise. Note that the shuttle to the "globopuerto" only collects clients from hotels not residences. The bus is not very comfortable and we had to ask for air-conditioning before almost suffocating due to lack of air! Still, it's a quick 1 hour drive with little traffic, so we survived :o)

There were many balloons being made ready as we arrived; it was freezing cold this fine morning in June. The hot coffee and cookies served in the hangar were a welcome treat! We had booked a private basket for the 3 of us and with the pilot we made a cozy group. My friend was very alarmed at how tiny the basket looked but once we were in it and lifted off she completely forgot about it! We flew low at first, so close to homes that dogs were barking up at us and people waved as they went about their business. We went higher and higher as we circled Teotihuacan and the view over the site was just incredible. We could see for miles across wonderful country side (and more ruins scattered around the area beyond the complex), mountains and even spotted El Popo (Popocatépetl Volcano) it was such a clear day. We were very lucky with the weather as the rainy season usually starts in June; the flight was smooth and trouble free. Our pilot spoke excellent English and we felt very safe in his capable hands. We then landed (very softly) in a field somewhere and were met by the pick-up in charge of the balloon. While the crew were busy packing up the balloon we enjoyed a glass of (extremely sweet) bubbly wine and snacks provided by Volare. We returned to the hangar for some celebrating with the crew and other clients; there is a lovely garden at the site complete with outdoor furnishings and a couple of peacocks! After we arranged for the bus (for an extra fee) to take us to Teotihuacan so we could walk around the pyramids for a bit. A couple of hours later we were picked up and taken back to Mexico City.

All in all this is a very worth while trip and all the staff at Volare were very helpful and friendly. My husband forgot his precious bush hat in the shuttle but Volare did not disappoint; the hat was returned a few days later!

Highly recommended!

“confirmed 3 times, they didnt even show up”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

booked a month ahead, called the week before we left canada, the said "yes we have your reservation we will pick you up at your hotel." The night before we had our hotel call to confirm the 6am pick up. the confirmed. 5:30 am we are in the lobby of the hotel. 6.15am no one is there we have the hotel call they say " we are on our way we are just having trouble with another tourist" we wait. 6:45 am we call again, no answer. 7am we call No answer. hotel says go have breakfast, i will call you if they show up.. (IF????) 9 Am they still never showed up and will not answer any calls. I understand after traveling in mexico for several years that there is canadian time and "mexico time" but this was a major disappointment. Good news is so far they have not debit the credit card. you can book it.. but good luck, they might pick you up they might not and even if they do from what i read you are not guaranteed to even fly over the pyramids.

“Do it”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

I took this flight, as I had in Turkey, in 2012. It was not the same experience. You must remember that flights in a balloon are determined by the direction of the wind. This is why the flights are early in the morning when, probably, the only influence on the flight is the earth’s rotation. Thus, the balloons leave an area which will take them over the area they wish to fly over, in this case, the pyramids. I was not aware that my flight was the second flight. So, therefore, I flew, but not over the pyramids. Not even close. My comment is therefore the following. When you reserve, make sure you will be on the first group to fly, not the second.
This being said, flying a balloon is one of the most enjoyable experience you could have. And if, in this case, you fly over the pyramids, you will have a view no one else has. This is a must. I used Flyvolare and my only negative comment has already been said. Don’t take the second flight. But fgly in a balloon over the pyramids.
