Before visiting Mexico City we didn't realise how prolific and impressive Diego Rivera's mural artwork was. And we had a very knowledgeable guide, Fernando Ledezma from Journeys Beyond the Surface walking tours (well worth doing!), to explain the numerous murals to us. Very interesting! Rivera's huge murals are in various impressive buildings in the central city area; well worth seeing. We also visited the twin Studios of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, where we learned much about their tempestuous relationship and their artwork. And within a few blocks of the Studios (a pleasant ten minute walk along cobbled streets) is a delightful town square and park with even more attractions: a beautiful old church , a museum, various curio shops and nice parkside restaurants.

The mural of Mexican history is worth the pittance admission.

This is a perfect way to enter the world of Diego Rivera, the best known Mexican muralist. Its located in a small modern museum at the end of the tiny Alameda park just off Alameda St in down town Mexico and just a few minutes walk from the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The highlight here is the display of the giant mural <Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park> which was painted originally for one of Mexico's most important luxury hotels on the Alameda opened in 1947. After the 1985 earthquake which badly damaged the hotel (its no longer there) the mural was moved to its current location. You will need at least an hour to enjoy this mural. It tells a number of stories about the history of Mexico City and of Mexico itself. A small pamphlet available in Spanish (last time I was there) helps you identify the main characters and places in the mural. Take your time; you will find this a wonderful introduction to the nationalist and Indianist vision of Mexican history. This Museum is NOT to be confused with Rivera's Casa Estudio in San Angel or Frida Kahlo's Blue House- in Coyoacán. Try and get to all three as well as the Rivera murals in the Palacio Nacional in the Zocalo.

Ok this is something to see but dont get a guide. IMHO I think its better you just read the info they have there or leach off some group there and listen. Its gets very long and one can only listen about murals for so long. Some stores are interesting others are kinda long winded.
